In vitro gastrointestinal digestion and colonic fermentation of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and husk tomato (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.): Phenolic compounds released and bioconverted by gut microbiota

Alicia P. Cardenas-Castro et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the bioaccessible phenolic compounds in tomato and husk tomato during upper gastrointestinal digestion, as well as the production of short-chain fatty acids from indigestible fractions through in vitro fermentation. It was found that vanillic acid was the most bioaccessible phenolic compound, and 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid was the most abundant microbial metabolite after 48 hours in both samples. Additionally, microbial metabolism of carotenoids may contribute to the presence of terpenes and their derivatives in tomato and husk tomato.

Chloroplast Genomes of Two Species of Cypripedium: Expanded Genome Size and Proliferation of AT-Biased Repeat Sequences

Yan-Yan Guo et al.

Summary: This study presented the sequencing, assembly and annotation of the chloroplast genomes of Cypripedium tibeticum and Cypripedium subtropicum, revealing their expanded genome size, low GC content, proliferation of AT-rich repeat sequences, and gene density. The increase in genome size is attributed to the proliferation of AT-biased non-coding regions, indicating a typical example of plastome expansion induced by non-coding regions in the genus. Hybrid assembly based on long and short reads is recommended for sequencing plastomes with AT-biased base composition.

Plastid genomes and phylogenomics of liverworts (Marchantiophyta): Conserved genome structure but highest relative plastid substitution rate in land plants

Shanshan Dong et al.

Summary: By using newly sequenced and published liverwort plastid genomes, this study provided insights into the phylogenomic inferences of liverworts, revealing the conserved structure of plastid genomes and variations in introns among different liverwort genera. The phylogenetic relationships of liverworts, particularly the position of Ptilidiales, were resolved with robust support. Additionally, the relative ratio of silent substitutions across different genetic compartments suggests a faster evolution rate of liverwort plastid genes compared to nuclear genes, which differs from other major land plant lineages.
