Summary: Crop evapotranspiration (ETc) is crucial for agronomic and water resource management, but accurate forecasting has been a challenge. In this study, real-time short and medium-term ETc forecast models were developed based on dynamic crop coefficient and historical threshold modification. The results showed that the new models accurately predicted ETc for different crops, with higher accuracy in shorter forecast periods. The study also found that integrating historical empirical threshold further improved the accuracy of short and medium-term ETc forecast.

Assessing maize potential to mitigate the adverse effects of future rising temperature and heat stress in China

Mingxia Huang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that rising temperatures, reduced photosynthesis due to heat stress, and decreased grain-filling rate caused by heat stress were the main reasons for future maize yield decreases in all subregions of China's Maize Belt. The priority of using cultivars with a longer growth period or higher heat tolerance to cope with climate warming depends on the local climate and cropping system. Overall, the potential for adapting to rising temperatures is generally higher than the potential for adapting to heat stress in all subregions across China's Maize Belt.
