Land Suitability for Cocoa Cultivation in Peru: AHP and MaxEnt Modeling in a GIS Environment

Nilton B. Rojas-Briceno et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify suitable land for cocoa cultivation on mainland Peru and analyzes using three different modeling approaches. The research found that climatological criteria are the most important among all criteria, while elevation is also of significance. Furthermore, San Martin and Amazonas are the most suitable regions for cocoa cultivation, with other regions varying depending on the modeling approach.

AHP-GIS and MaxEnt for delineation of potential distribution of Arabica coffee plantation under future climate in Yunnan, China

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the ecological suitability of Arabica coffee plantation using MaxEnt model and AHP-GIS technology, finding that climate factors significantly affected the ecological suitability, with maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and annual precipitation being the most important factors. The models predicted potential distribution of Arabica coffee under climate change scenario, providing reference for long-term planning and development programs to mitigate climate change effects on Arabica coffee distribution.

Potassium Application Positively Modulates Physiological Responses of Cocoa Seedlings to Drought Stress

Esther Anokye et al.

Summary: The study found that potassium application can improve the growth and survival of cocoa seedlings under water stress, enhancing biomass partitioning to roots, relative water content, and leaf membrane stability. Varieties with PA 7 parentage showed higher tolerance to drought, with indicators such as biomass partitioning to roots, RWC, chlorophyll fluorescence, and leaf electrolyte leakage being reliable predictors of cocoa seedling tolerance to drought.

Climate change impact on cultivated and wild cacao in Peru and the search of climate change-tolerant genotypes

Viviana Ceccarelli et al.

Summary: The study found that different modelling approaches are required for cultivated and wild cacao, and spatial filtering resolution has a significant impact on future suitability predictions. Overall, the models predict a contraction of suitable area for cultivated cacao while a more positive future for wild cacao in Peru. Changes in ecogeographical zones are expected in 8%-16% of the distribution, and several potential areas for climate change-tolerant genotypes were identified.

Detection of Cacao Mild Mosaic Virus (CaMMV) Using Nested PCR and Evidence of Uneven Distribution in Leaf Tissue

Alina S. Puig

Summary: The distribution of improved germplasm of Theobroma cacao is crucial for meeting the increased demand for cocoa beans, and a national and international quarantine system is in place to prevent the introduction of new diseases. The development of a nested PCR test based on CaMMV sequences has proven effective in detecting the virus in infected plants with low virus titer. Multiple strains of the virus were identified, suggesting introduction from various sources, and careful screening of infected scionwood is necessary to control the spread of CaMMV.
