Optimization of ultrasonic-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from pomegranate and orange peels and their antioxidant activity in a functional drink

Afshin Selahvarzi et al.

Summary: This study optimized the ultrasound extraction conditions of phenolic compounds from pomegranate and orange peels and used the extracts to enrich a functional drink. The results showed that the extraction time, temperature, and solid to solvent ratio had significant effects on the total phenol content and antioxidant activity. Adding the extracts to the drinks significantly enhanced the bioactive compounds content and antioxidant activity. However, during cold storage, the content of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity gradually decreased.

Study of vitamin E microencapsulation and controlled release from chitosan/sodium lauryl ether sulfate microcapsules

Jelena Milinkovic Budincic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential benefits of microencapsulation and the impact of different wall materials on the performance of microcapsules. It found that chitosan/SLES complex can be used as a wall material for microencapsulation of hydrophobic active molecules in the cosmetic industry, achieving high encapsulation efficiency without the use of aldehydes as cross-linking agents.

Date fruit processing waste and approaches to its valorization: A review

Sepideh Oladzad et al.

Summary: Dates are a traditional and economically valuable crop in the Middle East and North Africa, playing an essential role in people's daily diets. The waste generated from date fruit production and processing, such as Date press cake (DPC), can be valorized to produce products like volatile fatty acids and activated carbon. This review discusses the feasibility of using DPC as a green precursor for various chemical and biological processes.

Effect of Type and Concentration of Carrier Material on the Encapsulation of Pomegranate Peel Using Spray Drying Method

Katarina Savikin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a procedure for the valorization of pomegranate peel extract by microencapsulation with carbohydrate-based carrier materials, achieving stable extracts with preserved bioactive compounds. The best results were obtained with a carbohydrate-based carrier, showing higher encapsulation efficiency, hygroscopicity, and water solubility index. Carbohydrate-based microencapsulation can efficiently protect the stability and phytochemical characteristics of the powder.
