Genetic Diversity in the Italian Holstein Dairy Cattle Based on Pedigree and SNP Data Prior and After Genomic Selection

Michela Ablondi et al.

Summary: Genetic diversity is crucial for the long-term sustainability and future market demands of Italian Holstein dairy cattle. The use of genomic data in breeding programs has increased genetic gain but may also lead to potential loss of genetic variability.

Analysis of the Genetic Diversity and Family Structure of the Licha Black Pig Population on Jiaodong Peninsula, Shandong Province, China

Yuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the conservation status, genetic diversity, family structure, and degree of inbreeding of the Licha black pig population on Jiaodong Peninsula, China. The results provide insights into the management and conservation of this local pig breed. The study suggests utilizing genomic data to improve mating schemes based on family information obtained, in order to maintain genetic diversity and reduce inbreeding.

Single nucleotide polymorphism-based analysis of the genetic structure of the Min pig conserved population

Fanbing Meng et al.

Summary: This study reveals the insufficient genetic diversity of the Min pig conserved population. Due to the introgression of European commercial pig breeds and unscientific breeding process, it is necessary to construct the molecular pedigree of the nucleus conservation population for the Min pig.

Pedigree reconstruction and genetic analysis of major ornamental characters of ornamental crabapple (Malus spp.) based on paternity analysis

Hao Rong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic traits of offspring in ornamental crabapple and found that white flowers were a dominant qualitative trait, while the depth of red was a quantitative trait. The genetic characteristics of green leaves and the depth of red in the peel were similar to flower color. The weeping trait was recessive, and there was potential for breeding a specific blooming period.

Genetic Diversity and Relatedness among Captive African Painted Dogs in North America

Cassandra M. Miller-Butterworth et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess genetic variation and relatedness among North American captive African painted dogs, compare the data to wild and European populations, and facilitate the development of a global management plan. The results showed higher microsatellite heterozygosity but lower effective population size estimates compared to Europe. While there was no significant inbreeding overall, high relatedness values among individuals should be considered in future breeding programs.

Assessment of the Genetic Diversity of a Local Pig Breed Using Pedigree and SNP Data

Emil Krupa et al.

Summary: The genetic diversity of the local Prestice Black-Pied pig breed was assessed through analysis of pedigree and SNP data, revealing an average inbreeding rate of 3.44% and high within-breed heterozygosity. The effective population size was moderate, and moderate correlation coefficients were observed between F-PED and F-ROH in the pedigree. It is important to stabilize the inbreeding rate in the long-term through optimal contribution selection based on available SNP data.

T. P. Paim et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Brazilian hair sheep have an African origin and diverse genetic composition. Brazilian Somali and Brazilian Fat-tail are the most endangered sheep genetic resources in Brazil and should be the focus for conservation. Genetic diversity in global chicken breeds in relation to their genetic distances to wild populations

Dorcus Kholofelo Malomane et al.

Summary: Migration of a population from its founder population is expected to reduce genetic diversity and facilitate differentiation between populations, consistent with the theory of genetic isolation by distance. The genetic diversity of domesticated chicken populations is strongly correlated with their genetic distance to wild populations, and this relationship can predict the genetic diversity of domesticated populations. Genes with little genetic variation across populations, such as those associated with brain development, may be more conserved, while genes associated with processes like protein transport and metabolic processes may exhibit faster genetic diversity changes. Overall, these findings contribute to understanding the evolutionary patterns of different functional genomic regions in chicken.

An evaluation of inbreeding measures using a whole-genome sequenced cattle pedigree

Setegn Worku Alemu et al.

Summary: Estimators relying on the correlation between uniting gametes or on genomic relationships presented the highest correlations with variants causing inbreeding depression, while estimators relying on excess homozygosity or homozygous-by-descent segments were better at capturing whole-genome homozygosity. These results suggest that different estimators may be more suitable for different aspects of inbreeding.
