Canine parturition: what is known about the hormonal setting?

Summary: Parturition in dogs is a complex physiological process controlled by the precise timing of hormones, influenced by events leading to the end of pregnancy and fetal maturation. Progesterone produced by the corpora lutea plays a crucial role in maintaining pregnancy in dogs, with cortisol levels showing variability and possibly related to stress rather than the onset of parturition. Prostaglandins, oxytocin, and relaxin are also involved in the process, with oxytocin levels useful in distinguishing between normal and disturbed parturition. Despite providing important insights, further research is needed to better understand the hormonal interactions and timing implications for parturition in dogs.
