Extraction and characterization of polyphenols from non-conventional edible plants and their antioxidant activities

Yasir Iqbal et al.

Summary: Narrow leaf plantain, white clover, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue are non-conventional edible plants with high antioxidant capacity and rich in polyphenols. The study found that these plants contain a variety of polyphenolic compounds, which can be used in human foods, nutraceuticals, and functional foods.

The Impact of Plant Phytochemicals on the Gut Microbiota of Humans for a Balanced Life

Sarusha Santhiravel et al.

Summary: The gastrointestinal tract of humans forms a complex microbial ecosystem known as gut microbiota, which plays a vital role in various physiological processes and overall health. The consumption of specific dietary components can alter the composition and function of gut microbiota, resulting in potential health benefits. Phytochemicals, bioactive plant components, can modify gut microflora by stimulating certain microbial communities in the intestine. These compounds are not easily absorbed and can have prolonged effects on gut microbiota population, improving performance and well-being.

Impact of thermal stress on physiological, behavioural and biochemical parameters in native and crossbred goats

D. Yamin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association of temperature-humidity index with physiological, biochemical and behavioral responses in different breeds of goats in Kerala, India. The findings suggest a positive correlation between temperature-humidity index and respiratory rates, rectal temperatures, heart rate, and skin temperatures. Physiological parameters were more significantly altered in Malabari goats. Increased temperature and humidity influenced the behavioral patterns of goats, leading to more time spent in standing position. The study also observed significant differences in biochemical and endocrine parameters among the breeds.

Critical overview of the use of plant antioxidants in the meat industry: Opportunities, innovative applications and future perspectives

M. Estevez

Summary: The number of studies focusing on the effects of natural antioxidants on meat systems has significantly increased in the past decade. However, a critical review of the literature reveals recurring flaws in various aspects including rationale, experimental design, plant source characterization, discussion of molecular mechanisms, and potential benefits. Selecting appropriate antioxidant sources and identifying their bioactive constituents are essential for understanding their mode of action and establishing effective and safe doses.

Reducing Disease Activity of Inflammatory Bowel Disease by Consumption of Plant-Based Foods and Nutrients

Christian S. Antoniussen et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract, with diet and environmental factors believed to play important roles in its onset and treatment. Western diets high in fats, omega-6 fatty acids, and meat have been associated with intestinal inflammation and disease relapse, while plant-based diets may help reduce intestinal inflammation.

The Sources, Synthesis and Biological Actions of Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids in Red Meat: An Overview

Eric N. Ponnampalam et al.

Summary: Maximizing available resources for animal production, food security, and human-animal wellbeing is crucial for an economically viable and sustainable future. Consumption of n-3 PUFA can improve human health, while high levels of n-6 PUFA consumption may have negative effects. Current high consumption of n-6 PUFA by humans could be improved by increasing intake of n-3 PUFA, which could also benefit livestock health.

Health-Promoting Phytonutrients Are Higher in Grass-Fed Meat and Milk

Stephan van Vliet et al.

Summary: While concerns have been raised about the health effects of consuming red meat, the impact of how livestock are raised and finished on consumer health is often overlooked. Meat and milk, regardless of rearing practices, provide essential nutrients and health-promoting phytonutrients when livestock are fed a diverse array of plants on pasture. The phytochemical richness of livestock diets has the potential to benefit human health through improved nutrient density in animal products.
