The effect of hides and parity on behavior of periparturient dairy cows at pasture

Margit Bak Jensen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of dairy cows during calving under spacious outdoor conditions and the effects of artificial hides on their selection of calving location. The results showed that primiparous cows tended to distance themselves further from the herd during calving and preferred to isolate themselves through distance rather than seeking artificial cover.

The Basolateral Amygdala to Ventral Hippocampus Circuit Controls Anxiety-Like Behaviors Induced by Morphine Withdrawal

Cuola Deji et al.

Summary: Anxiety is a common comorbid condition in individuals with opioid dependence. This study used a mouse model to investigate the circuitry and molecular basis of anxiety associated with chronic opioid use. The researchers found that anxiety-like behaviors appeared during morphine withdrawal and identified the specific brain regions and circuits involved. They also discovered that inhibiting a specific circuit using optogenetics/chemogenetics improved anxiety-like behaviors, and using KOR antagonists prevented anxiety behavior relapse.

Intranasal Oxytocin Improves Social Behavior in Laboratory Beagle Dogs (Canis familiaris) Using a Custom-Made Social Test Battery

Borbala Turcsan et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of oxytocin on the social behavior of laboratory beagle dogs and found that it had a more positive effect on dogs with lower baseline performance. Dogs with low baseline performance showed increased contact seeking and affiliative behaviors towards humans after oxytocin administration, while dogs with high baseline performance showed more negative reactions. These findings suggest that the effects of oxytocin on dogs' social behavior are constrained by individual characteristics and the context.

A preoptic neuronal population controls fever and appetite during sickness

Jessica A. Osterhout et al.

Summary: This study identifies a previously uncharacterized population of neurons in the brain that are activated after infection, playing a crucial role in generating fever response and other sickness symptoms. By examining gene expression and electrophysiological measurements, the researchers uncover a mechanism where these neurons are influenced by immune signals released by non-neuronal cells during infection and are functionally connected to brain areas controlling body temperature and appetite.

Is maternal defensiveness of Gyr cows (Bos taurus indicus) related to parity and cows' behaviors during the peripartum period?

Rogerio Ribeiro Vicentini et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of peripartum behaviors on maternal care and defensiveness in Gyr cows. It was found that multiparous cows tended to be more aggressive during the first handling of their calves. Primiparous cows exhibited more pain signs during the pre-calving period, while multiparous cows were more prone to movement. The most protective cows spent more time eating during the prepartum period, while less attentive cows spent more time lying down.

Neural Functions of Hypothalamic Oxytocin and its Regulation

Ping Wang et al.

Summary: Oxytocin (OT) has neuromodulatory effects in the brain and spinal cord, regulating various functions such as social recognition, learning and memory, emotion, reward, and instinctive behaviors. It also regulates autonomic nervous system and specialized senses. Notably, OT can have different modulatory effects on the same function under different conditions.

Oxytocin receptor expression in the midbrain dorsal raphe is dynamic across female reproduction in rats

Zachary A. Grieb et al.

Summary: The study reveals that oxytocin receptor (OTR) expression in the rostral midbrain dorsal raphe (DR) significantly increases during parturition and then returns to normal levels by postpartum day 7. Different subpopulations of dopamine, GABA, and serotonin cells in the rostral DR show varied levels of sensitivity to OTR during parturition and early postpartum period, suggesting a dynamic OTR signaling in the female midbrain DR during the reproductive cycle.

Effect of Different Cross-Fostering Strategies on Growth Performance, Stress Status and Immunoglobulin of Piglets

Xiaojun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that cross-fostering within 24 hours of birth has a negative effect on the average daily gain (ADG) of piglets with high birth weight, but no negative effect on piglets with low or intermediate birth weight. Additionally, late cross-fostering at day 7 after farrowing has negative impacts on the growth performance and teat order of piglets with intermediate birth weight, as well as increasing cortisol levels in the piglets.

Oxytocin Receptor Gene Polymorphism in Lactating Dogs

Asahi Ogi et al.

Summary: The study found a significant correlation between oxytocin receptor gene polymorphism, peripheral oxytocin, and maternal behavior in dogs, indicating that a more functional oxytocinergic system would lead to better mothering in dogs. These findings could help us better understand the potential impact of variants in the OXTR gene in selecting dams.

Cellular Composition of the Preoptic Area Regulating Sleep, Parental, and Sexual Behavior

Yousuke Tsuneoka et al.

Summary: The preoptic area (POA) is recognized as a sleep center and is involved in regulating various innate functions such as sexual and parental behaviors. Different subregions within the POA show distinct gene and protein expressions, contributing to its roles in sleep and reproductive behavior. Neurons in the POA exhibit diverse activity patterns depending on vigilance states, and play a role in enhancing or suppressing wake, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, or rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

The Influence of Oxytocin on Maternal Care in Lactating Dogs

Asahi Ogi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the possible correlation between salivary oxytocin and maternal care in 25 lactating dogs, finding a weak negative correlation between salivary oxytocin and certain behaviors. Additionally, salivary oxytocin was positively correlated with the percentage of male puppies, suggesting a sex-biased parental investment. These results imply that salivary oxytocin may not strongly influence maternal care dynamics, but may be associated with sex-biased parental investment in dogs.

Maternal behavior, novelty confrontation, and subcortical c-Fos expression during lactation period are shaped by gestational environment

Mauricio A. Nunez-Murrieta et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to different environmental conditions during gestation can impact postpartum maternal behavior and the activity of brain regions related to social behavior, leading to differences in nurturing and defensive behavior in postpartum rats. This suggests that the environment has an influence on brain activity and behavior.

Visualising oxytocin neurone activity in vivo: The key to unlocking central regulation of parturition and lactation

Michael R. Perkinson et al.

Summary: During parturition and lactation, oxytocin neurons fire high-frequency bursts of action potentials coordinated across the population, stimulated by cervical stretch and suckling. Despite unclear mechanisms, bursts are considered an emergent property of oxytocin neurons that involve somato-dendritic oxytocin release. New technologies are now focusing on understanding the neural mechanisms that control these bursts.

Profile of Dogs' Breeders and Their Considerations on Female Reproduction, Maternal Care and the Peripartum Stress-An International Survey

Natalia Ribeiro Santos et al.

Summary: Breeding activity in Western countries is mainly driven by small-scale hobby or sporadic breeders, with a common focus on reducing stress in dogs. Breeders from different countries have slightly different approaches to managing prepartum stress, but generally tend to increase human presence to reassure the mother dogs. The use of concepts like ovulation induction and pregnancy diagnosis by ultrasound is common in breeding practices.
