Comparative evaluation of different animal models for genetic analysis of body weight traits in an organized Corriedale sheep population

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate different animal models for their appropriateness to best fit the body weight data of Corriedale lambs at different ages. The study found that environmental factors played a significant role in generating variation in body weight traits in Corriedale sheep. The low estimates of heritability suggest that individual selection may result in slow progress for body weight traits in this population.

Genetic parameters and trends of growth traits in community-based breeding programs of Abera sheep in Ethiopia

Summary: The current study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and trends for growth traits in Abera sheep under community-based breeding programs in Ethiopia. The study found that various factors, such as sex, breeder cooperative, season, and birth type, significantly influenced the growth traits. Positive genetic progress was observed in weaning weight and six-month weight in different breeder cooperatives during the selection years.

Genetic studies on the estimates of (Co) variance components for growth traits in Barbari goat

Summary: The current study evaluated the genetic progress and variability for growth traits in the Barbari goat population in India and provided suggestions for the existing breeding program. The analysis included a large number of animals descended from different parents over a period of 28 years. The study identified significant factors affecting growth traits and estimated genetic parameters using animal models. The results indicated moderate heritability for growth traits and suggested potential for selecting Barbari goats based on these traits.

The results can be incorporated into genetic selection programs to benefit small sheep producers and promote livestock development in low-income rural areas.

Influence of maternal and additive genetic effects on offspring growth traits in Beetal goat

Relationship between direct and maternal genetic effects on weaning weight of Limousin and crossbred beef calves

Summary: Genetic parameters, breeding values, and genetic trends were estimated for weaning weight of Limousin beef cattle calves from 1992 to 2019. Maternal heritability was approximately half of direct heritability, with strong negative direct maternal genetic correlation coefficients observed. The Spearman rank correlation between direct and maternal breeding value was moderate and negative in purebred population, and strong and negative in crossbred population. The genetic trend of weaning weight appeared stagnant during the examined period for both purebred and crossbred Limousin calves.

Genetic Parameters for Maternal Performance Traits in Commercially Farmed New Zealand Beef Cattle

Summary: This research found that there is almost no genetic variation for pregnancy outcomes in 15-month-old heifers and mature cows in New Zealand farming conditions, but there is potential for improvement in reproductive performance in 2-year-old cows through genetic selection. Cows with higher genetic potential for rebreeding ability as young cows may have greater genetic merit for certain traits, but are not likely to become larger cows at maturity. Maternal genetic effects on weaning weight were negatively correlated with body condition score in lactating cows, but positively correlated with rebreeding performance.
