The effects of glutathione supplementation on post-thawed Turkey semen quality and oxidative stress parameters and fertilization, and hatching potential

H. Izanloo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of adding glutathione to turkey semen extenders on post-thawed semen quality and fertility. Results showed that 2, 1, and 0.5 mM of GSH in extenders improved motility, membrane integrity, and antioxidant capacity, with 2 mM GSH significantly increasing fertility in post-thawed turkey semen.

Combination of trehalose and low boron in presence of decreased glycerol improves post-thawed ram sperm parameters: A model study in boron research

Mustafa Numan Bucak et al.

Summary: The study aimed to establish a suitable ram semen extender model by examining different combinations of glycerol concentrations, trehalose, and boron to prevent sperm deterioration and investigate gene expressions. Results showed that supplementation of 0.25 mm boron improved sperm parameters and acrosome integrity, while high boron concentrations had adverse effects on sperm parameters and antioxidant gene expression after thawing. The use of sufficient boron can decrease cryodamages during sperm cryopreservation and tissue engineering.

New Insight on the In Vitro Effects of Melatonin in Preserving Human Sperm Quality

Sergio Minucci et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of melatonin (MLT) on human sperm parameters under oxidative stress induced by cadmium (Cd). Results showed that oxidative stress decreased sperm motility, DNA integrity, and increased apoptosis, but these effects were counteracted by MLT co-treatment. MLT alone also improved sperm motility and prevented physiological alterations. The study suggests that MLT can be used as a protective molecule to improve human gamete quality under stressful conditions.

Synergistic effects of myo-inositol and melatonin on cryopreservation of goat spermatozoa

Nima Tanhaei Vash et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of co-supplementation of melatonin and myo-inositol on post-cryopreservation quality of goat spermatozoa. The results showed that the combined supplementation improved sperm motility, viability, membrane integrity, acrosome morphology, while reducing reactive oxygen species, DNA damage, and lipid peroxidation. Additionally, the combination also improved the cleavage rate of in vitro produced embryos.

Optimization of the Thawing Protocol for Iberian Boar Sperm

Cristina Tomas-Almenar et al.

Summary: Limited attention has been given to sperm thawing protocols, but it is important for endangered species or breeds. This study aimed to determine the most optimal thawing protocol for Iberian boar sperm. The findings suggest that thawing at 70 degrees C for 8 s with the inclusion of cyclodextrins loaded with cholesterol (CLC) in the extender is the best protocol.

Photobiomodulation preconditioned human semen protects sperm cells against detrimental effects of cryopreservation

Fereshteh Safian et al.

Summary: The study showed that preconditioning semen samples with photobiomodulation (PBM) before cryopreservation significantly improved sperm motility, viability, mitochondrial membrane potential, while decreasing intracellular reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation levels. These findings suggest a novel strategy for enhancing assisted reproductive technologies through PBM application.

Sperm quality in transgender women before or after gender affirming hormone therapy-A prospective cohort study

Kenny A. Rodriguez-Wallberg et al.

Summary: Access to fertility preservation for transgender individuals has opened up in several countries due to changes in the legal framework. However, a high occurrence of sperm abnormalities was found in transgender women, especially among those who had previously received gender affirming hormone therapy. It is important to discuss parenthood options and fertility preservation with patients early on and refer them for semen banking before starting hormone therapy.

Melatonin improves the quality of frozen bull semen and influences gene expression related to embryo genome activation

Guanghua Su et al.

Summary: The study showed that melatonin has a significant impact on the entire process of sperm cryopreservation, oocyte maturation, and embryonic development. Melatonin can improve sperm viability, membrane integrity, reduce ROS levels, increase oocyte maturation rate, and enhance total cell numbers of IVF blastocysts. Melatonin treatment also influences the expression levels of key regulatory genes associated with embryo genome activation.
