Epibionts of an Introduced King Crab in the Barents Sea: A Second Five-Year Study

Alexander G. Dvoretsky et al.

Summary: In this study, the biodiversity, infestation patterns, and spatial distribution of organisms living in association with the introduced red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus were examined in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay, southern Barents Sea, from 2009 to 2013. A total of 90 associated species were found, double the number from 2004 to 2008, indicating low similarity between these periods. The most important factors affecting the prevalence and intensity of infestation were host size, shell condition, water temperatures, and sex. These findings contribute to our understanding of red king crab infestation patterns and provide a baseline for future monitoring.

Fatty acid profile of cooked leg meat and raw hepatopancreas of red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) during three-month live holding without feeding at 5 and 10 °C

Federico Lian et al.

Summary: The fatty acid composition of cooked leg meat remained stable, while the raw hepatopancreas was significantly affected by the live holding period without feeding. Long-chain highly unsaturated fatty acids were preferentially retained during live holding, indicating potential for practical application in selecting suitable feed for red king crab.

Environmental Drivers of an Intertidal Bryozoan Community in the Barents Sea: A Case Study

Olga Yu. Evseeva et al.

Summary: Bryozoans are colonial organisms commonly found attached to solid substrata. This study focused on intertidal communities of bryozoans in the Barents Sea, assessing the role of environmental factors in diversity and biomass fluctuations. The results showed that salinity and temperature were the main predictors of bryozoan species richness and biomass, with more diverse and abundant assemblages occupying habitats with higher salinity and lower temperature. The study provides important insights into the biodiversity of changing marine ecosystems in the Arctic region.

Renewal of the amateur red king crab fishery in Russian waters of the Barents Sea: Potential benefits and costs

Alexander G. Dvoretsky et al.

Summary: The introduction of red king crab in the Barents Sea has supported commercial Russian fishery. Recreational fishing for red king crab was initially allowed but later banned within certain coastal zones, only to be renewed in some areas. Advantages include increased satisfaction for locals and tourism potential, while disadvantages involve potential contamination, illegal fishing, and additional costs.

Critical Review on Fatty Acid-Based Food and Nutraceuticals as Supporting Therapy in Cancer

Carla Ferreri et al.

Summary: Fatty acids play a crucial role in both biology and nutrition, and their impact on the onset and development of diseases, including cancer, is well known. Using fatty acid-based food and supplements to support cancer therapy requires multidisciplinary research. The composition of membrane fatty acids is essential in membrane lipid therapy. Additionally, fatty acids also serve as biomarkers for cancer and can be personalized for treatment.

Cardio-Protective Properties and Health Benefits of Fish Lipid Bioactives; The Effects of Thermal Processing

Alexandros Tsoupras et al.

Summary: The beneficial effects of fish-derived lipid bioactives, including omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids, lipid vitamins, carotenoids, and polar lipid bioactives, have been extensively studied for their potential in preventing chronic disorders, particularly inflammation and cardiovascular diseases. This article reviews recent findings on the lipid content, bio-functionality, and cardio-protective benefits of commonly consumed fish species. The recovery and utilization of lipid bioactives from fish by-products and fishing by-catch are also highlighted for their industrial and environmental significance. The effects of heat treatments during fish processing on the structures and functionality of these marine lipid bioactives are discussed, as well as the need for novel green extraction technologies and low temperature processing methods to minimize undesirable changes in the lipid profile.

Fatty acids in the circulatory system of an invasive king crab from the Barents Sea

Alexander G. Dvoretsky et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fatty acid composition in the cardiac muscle and hemolymph of adult crabs collected in the coastal Barents Sea. The results showed that polyunsaturated fatty acids were the major fatty acids in both tissues, followed by saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids. The fatty acid profiles were similar among different groups of crabs. The study also suggested that the discarded byproducts from red king crab processing could be a potential additional source for extracting valuable n-3 fatty acids.

Ecology and Distribution of Red King Crab Larvae in the Barents Sea: A Review

Vladimir G. Dvoretsky et al.

Summary: The red king crab (RKC) larvae have an important impact on the spread and recruitment of the population in the Barents Sea. They have different characteristics compared to their counterparts in the North Pacific. RKC larvae can be found in coastal plankton from late January to mid-July, with the highest densities in semi-enclosed bays with weak water exchange. They perform daily vertical migrations, diving during daylight and rising at night. RKC larvae feed on both phyto- and zooplankton.

Fatty acid composition of the Barents Sea red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) leg meat

Alexander G. Dvoretsky et al.

Summary: Research on fatty acid profiles of the Barents Sea red king crab is limited, but a study analyzing leg meat found high concentrations of PUFA, moderate levels of SFA, and lower amounts of MUFA. Regardless of variations in size, shell condition, limb injuries, or sex, the fatty acid concentrations in red king crab meat were consistent. The meat of Barents Sea red king crabs contains higher levels of SFA and PUFA compared to crabs from other regions, making it a valuable source of essential fatty acids for human consumption.

Sex Hormones in Hemolymph of Red King Crabs from the Barents Sea

Alexander G. Dvoretsky et al.

Summary: The sex hormones testosterone and 17 beta-estradiol play crucial roles in the reproduction of red king crabs, with testosterone reaching its peak during the spawning period. The concentrations of sex steroids in red king crabs are higher than in other crustaceans, possibly due to their larger size. There were no significant differences in sex hormone levels between male and female crabs, as well as between immature and mature individuals.
