Summary: By using short- and long-term time-resolved techniques, the potential of strontium substituted beta-tricalcium phosphate (Sr-TCP) cement for bone regeneration is explored. The disappearance of Sr-TCP phase and the appearance of brushite phase are observed after 45 minutes of cement setting. The compressive strength of Sr-TCP cement increases over time and reaches its maximum after 21 days. The presence of apatite final product with an admixture of brushite and TCP phases is detected after 21 days of cement soaking in Ringer solution.

Summary: This study uses statistical physics to study the epidemic waves of the Covid-19 pandemic. The results show that there are different frequency components in the epidemic waves in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan over a two-year period. The study finds that the vaccination campaign slows down the spread of the epidemic, and there is an intrinsic difference between infection waves and fatality waves, possibly due to genetic variations.

Selection rules for the orbital angular momentum of optically produced THz radiation

A. Curcio et al.

Summary: In this theoretical study, the transduction of orbital angular momentum (OAM) from infrared pump lasers to the THz domain is investigated. The selection rules for OAM transduction differ between optical rectification and difference frequency generation, with the former following a strict rule of l = 0 and the latter allowing a range of values for the difference Delta l. The degree of diffraction resulting from tightly focused pump beams also influences the OAM values in THz generation.

A THz graphene metasurface for polarization selective virus sensing

M. Amin et al.

Summary: A novel method utilizing the chirality of highly sensitive graphene plasmonic metasurfaces is proposed to characterize the complex refractive indexes of viruses by detecting the polarization state of the reflected electric fields in the THz spectrum. The method exploits chiral surface currents to couple linearly polarized incident fields to circularly polarized reflected fields, resulting in unique polarization states in the far-field with ellipticity values that change rapidly with the analyte's refractive index. The method demonstrates potential for virus characterization with simpler instrumentation compared to traditional spectroscopic methods.
