Diet composition of Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus) from the Han River Estuary Wetland in Korea using fecal DNA

Jihee Kim et al.

Summary: The study investigated the foraging preferences of Korean water deer in the Janghang wetlands of South Korea by analyzing their diet compositions through DNA extracted from fecal samples. Results showed that the deer predominantly preferred Salicaceae, Fabaceae, and Poaceae, with a higher detection of woody plants in winter, suggesting they are intermediate feeders browsing or grazing on locally-available plant species in their habitat. Non-invasive methods using fecal samples could be applied for studying food webs in conservation and management of wildlife.
