Performance improvement of a Savonius turbine by using auxiliary blades

Khaled R. Abdelaziz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance enhancement of conventional Savonius turbines by adding auxiliary blades and examines the gap ratio in a newly developed turbine. The results show that the power coefficient can be significantly increased with the addition of curved and straight auxiliary blades, as well as in the newly developed turbine.

On the Performance of a Modified Triple Stack Blade Savonius Wind Turbine as a Function of Geometrical Parameters

Reza Norouztabar et al.

Summary: This study numerically analyzed the performance of a modified Savonius wind turbine equipped with secondary blades and slots. It found that factors such as the distance between the main blade and the secondary blade, the position of the secondary blade, and the width of the main blade's slot all have significant impacts on the torque generation. By adjusting the geometrical parameters accurately, the torque output can be optimized.

Study on Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Savonius Wind Turbine with a Modified Blade

Zhongqiu Mu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a modified Savonius wind turbine to improve the static start-up problem. By twisting the blades, the turbine's performance was compared before and after the modification through numerical simulation and wind tunnel experiments. Results show that the spiral wind turbine has better start-up performance and a more stable torque coefficient.

Influence of a passive upstream deflector on the performance of the Savonius wind turbine

Wenlong Tian et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the aerodynamic efficiency of the Savonius wind turbine can be improved by adding a properly designed deflector upstream of the rotor blade. However, existing deflector designs are only effective in specific flow directions, resulting in the loss of omnidirectionality. This paper proposes a passive deflector that can adjust its position passively with changes in wind direction, thereby improving the efficiency of the Savonius rotor regardless of wind directions. Computational fluid dynamics simulations are conducted to investigate the aerodynamic performance of the Savonius rotor with the new deflector, and the results demonstrate a significant increase in efficiency.

3D Multidisciplinary Automated Design Optimization Toolbox for Wind Turbine Blades

Sagi Sagimbayev et al.

Summary: This paper introduces two novel automated optimization approaches for wind turbine blade design. The first approach focuses on optimizing the overall blade shape by modifying the parametric model, while the second approach concentrates on optimizing individual cross-section shapes to achieve high power output. Results from a case study show that the second approach generates more accurate results in whole rotor simulations compared to the first approach.

Numerical assessment of the effect of different end-plates on the performance of a finite-height Savonius turbine

Mohsen Goodarzi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that circular end-plates can significantly improve the power coefficient of wind turbines, especially at TSR = 0.6. However, the circular end-plate also introduces higher levels of drag and lift forces. Therefore, a quarter-spherical end-plate may be a better alternative option.

Study on the Aerodynamic Performance of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Considering the Tower Shadow Effect

Danmei Hu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the aerodynamic performance of floating offshore wind turbines with and without a tower under different motions through computational fluid dynamics. The results show that the tower shadow effect reduces the power output of the wind turbine and interferes with the pressure distribution, especially under yaw motion. The interference of tower shadow effect also results in a more complex wake structure in the flow field.

Computational fluid dynamics study of Savonius rotors using OpenFOAM

Federico Gonzalez Madina et al.

Summary: This work simulated two-dimensional models of Savonius rotors to predict the aerodynamic performance of small-scale vertical-axis wind turbines using OpenFOAM(R). The results compared power coefficient with experimental data and analyzed forces acting on the rotors with different geometries. Simulations with first- and second-order discretization schemes were compared, along with an analysis of different domains to optimize grid dimensions for the simulations. Furthermore, a setup for computational fluid dynamics simulation of two-dimensional Savonius rotors was proposed to analyze fluid-rotor interaction and correlation of vortex shedding with CP values and wake description.
