Partitioning and mobility of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in an ancient Pb-Zn mine in central Mexico: Role of amorphous ferric arsenate

J. Aguilar-Carrillo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactions between Pb and As and amorphous ferric arsenate (AFA) in an ancient mine with highly-dispersed pollutants under strongly acidic conditions. The study reveals that AFA plays a crucial role in controlling the mobility of Pb and As in the mine.

Evolution of pyrite oxidation from a 10-year kinetic leach study: Implications for secondary mineralisation in acid mine drainage control

Rong Fan et al.

Summary: Research suggests that in weathered pyritic wastes, the release of acidity is primarily from secondary sulfate minerals rather than residual pyrite, requiring specific treatment strategies. Dissolving secondary minerals containing stored acidity necessitates the use of lime-saturated water with high alkalinity.

Temporal evolution of acid mine drainage (AMD) leachates from the abandoned tharsis mine (Iberian Pyrite Belt, Spain)*

Raul Moreno-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Acid mine drainage (AMD) caused by sulfide mining is a major source of water pollution globally. This study investigates the temporal variations and hydrogeochemical processes affecting AMD composition in the Tharsis mines in Spain. The findings highlight the significant pollutant load and degradation of surrounding water bodies caused by the Tharsis mines.

Evaluation of the Long-Term Contaminated Neutral Drainage CND Generation Potential of Waste Rock Piles at the Abandoned Zn-Pb Erdouz Mine (Occidental High Atlas, Morocco)

Abdelmalek Goumih et al.

Summary: The abandoned waste rock piles at the Erdouz mine in Morocco generate contaminated neutral drainage, mainly composed of sulfates, that exceed the country's standards for direct discharges. However, after chemical treatment, the waste rock could potentially be recovered and used as a substitute for construction materials.

Reprocessing feasibility of polymetallic waste rock for cleaner and sustainable mining

Hicham Amar et al.

Summary: Mining operations produce a significant amount of waste rocks with high heterogeneity in their properties. This study assessed the acid-generating potential and reprocessing feasibility of polymetallic waste rocks, as well as studied their geochemical behavior. A combined gravity-flotation process was effective in decontaminating the waste rocks, resulting in a benign desulphurised material with low sulphur content and high base metals recovery.

Trace elements leaching from Pb-Zn mine waste (Plombieres, Belgium) and environmental implications

Jillian Helser et al.

Summary: The study characterized mine waste samples from a former Zn-Pb mining site, revealing high concentrations of metals such as Pb, Zn, Cd, and As, with lead present in highly bioaccessible forms posing potential risks. The release of lead was mainly controlled by the dissolution of cerussite, even at natural pH values. X-ray diffraction analyses showed a decrease in cerussite content after leaching with water, indicating the potential threats the mine waste poses to human health and the environment.

A cross scale investigation of galena oxidation and controls on mobilization of lead in mine waste rock

Zhongwen Bao et al.

Summary: Galena and Pb-bearing secondary phases are major sources of lead in terrestrial environments. This study investigates the oxidation of galena and accumulation of secondary phases that influence the release and mobilization of lead within a sulfide-bearing waste-rock pile. The results show that reaction mechanisms vary at different scales.

Systematic characterization of historical tailings for possible remediation and recovery of critical metals and minerals-The Yxsjoberg case

Jane Mulenshi et al.

Summary: With increasing environmental concerns in mining and demand for critical metals and minerals, historical tailings have become a focus of research. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for generating and structuring relevant information about historical tailings. A case study in Sweden demonstrates the application of this framework for analysis and research.

Characterisation and prediction of acid rock drainage potential in waste rock: Value of integrating quantitative mineralogical and textural measurements

Olga Guseva et al.

Summary: The study applies mineralogical and textural data to geochemical characterization and humidity cell tests, estimating fundamental sampling error and mineralogical error through binomial distribution and confidence intervals for liberation data. The research found that mineralogy was crucial for interpreting sample classification in ARD characterization tests, and the encapsulation of Fe-sulfides in certain minerals helped understand the behavior of samples in ARD prediction tests after humidity cell testing.

Summary: Thallium is a highly toxic trace metal that poses a significant threat to human health. Research on thallium pollution and its association with sulfate minerals is limited. The dissolution of sulfate minerals accelerates pyrite oxidation, affecting the mobility of thallium in soil and crops.

Leaching of trace metals (Pb) from contaminated tailings amended with iron oxides and manure: New insight from a modelling approach

Samuel Mertz et al.

Summary: Reclamation measurements are commonly used to reduce the leaching of metal pollutants, with recent experiments showing that adding ochre and manure can significantly decrease the leaching of metal pollutants, especially Pb. A multicomponent mixing model was developed to simulate and forecast the impact of amendments on leaching, providing insights into the biogeochemical processes involved in immobilizing metal pollutants.

Geochemical behaviour of benign desulphurised waste rocks for mine drainage control and sustainable management

Hicham Amar et al.

Summary: Large volumes of waste rock are generated in open-pit mines, characterized by high anisotropy. Mineralogical investigations defined the diameter of physical locking of sulphides allowing the waste rock to be separated into reactive fine and inert coarse fractions. Environmental desulphurisation of the reactive fine fraction effectively reduces contamination risk.

Role of secondary minerals in the acid generating potential of weathered mine tailings: Crystal-chemistry characterization and closed mine site management involvement

Abdellatif Elghali et al.

Summary: When mine tailings are exposed to water and oxygen, acid mine drainage (AMD) can be generated, leading to the release of metal(oid)s into the environment. Fresh and oxidized tailings show significant differences in their physical, mineralogical, and geochemical properties, with oxidized tailings releasing large amounts of iron, sulfur, and zinc.
