Fungal resistance and leachability of genipin-crosslinked chitosan treated wood

Courage Alorbu et al.

Summary: This study examines the decay resistance and leachability of genipin-crosslinked chitosan (GC) treated wood. The results show that GC exhibits similar efficacy as chitosan in inhibiting the growth of wood-decaying fungi and improves the retention and mass gain of wood samples. However, the leaching rate of chitosan was not reduced by cross-linking with genipin. In terms of durability, GC-treated wood samples have lower mass loss compared to the control groups.

Emerging Antifungal Targets and Strategies

Marija Ivanov et al.

Summary: Despite extensive research on antifungal drug discovery, fungal infections continue to pose a significant healthcare burden. The current antifungal options are limited in their efficacy and safety, calling for the development of novel antifungals. As our understanding of fungal physiology and infection mechanisms advances, there is an opportunity to utilize this knowledge for the development of new generations of antifungals.

Hydrolyzable tannins (ellagitannins), flavonoids, pentacyclic triterpenes and their glycosides in antimycobacterial extracts of the ethnopharmacologically selected Sudanese medicinal plant Combretum hartmannianum Schweinf

Enass Y. A. Salih et al.

Summary: In Sudanese traditional medicine, extracts from the stem and root of Combretum hartmannianum are used to treat persistent cough, possibly related to tuberculosis. This study found that the ethyl acetate extract of the root showed strong growth inhibitory effects against Mycobacterium smegmatis, containing various polyphenols. Among these compounds, luteolin exhibited the best inhibition against M. smegmatis compared to other compounds like corilagin, ellagic acid, and gallic acid.
