Roles of Ferredoxin-Dependent Proteins in the Apicoplast of Plasmodium falciparum Parasites

Russell P. Swift et al.

Summary: Fd/FNR system plays a central role in the apicoplast of malaria parasites, providing reducing power to FeS proteins. This study found that Fd, FNR, and certain FeS proteins are essential for parasite survival, but not required for organelle maintenance. Additionally, the study demonstrated functional redundancy of SufA and NfuApi in delivering FeS clusters to Fd and other FeS proteins.

Effect of Artemisinin on the Redox System of NADPH/FNR/Ferredoxin from Malaria Parasites

Yoko Kimata-Ariga et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of DHA on the NADPH/FNR/ferredoxin redox cascade system and found that DHA can partially inhibit the activity of FNR but does not significantly affect the electron transfer activity from FNR to wild-type or D97Y mutant ferredoxin. Computer docking analysis suggested that DHA may bind to the binding cavity of FNR. The mutation in ferredoxin may be involved in the protective response against the oxidative stress caused by artemisinin.

Diagnostic Methods for Non-Falciparum Malaria

Alba Marina Gimenez et al.

Summary: Malaria is a serious public health problem affecting the poorest countries in the world, with differential diagnosis of Plasmodium species being important for treatment selection. Current diagnostic methods mainly focus on detecting P. falciparum, leading to neglect of other non-falciparum species. There is a need for new alternative methods to differentiate Plasmodium species in a faster, cheaper, and easier manner.
