Pollution and health: a progress update

Richard Fuller et al.

Summary: The Lancet Commission on pollution and health reported that pollution was responsible for 9 million premature deaths in 2015, making it the world's largest environmental risk factor for disease and premature death. Updated data from 2019 shows that pollution is still responsible for approximately 9 million deaths per year, with reductions in some types of pollution offset by increases in others. Despite efforts, little progress has been made in addressing pollution, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries.

Tryptophan-like fluorescence as a high-level screening tool for detecting microbial contamination in drinking water

Jade S. T. Ward et al.

Summary: Regular monitoring of drinking water quality is crucial to prevent waterborne diseases. Testing for microbial contamination is important, especially in low-resource settings. Tryptophan-like fluorescence (TLF) shows potential as a rapid method for detecting microbial contamination in drinking water sources.

Detection and distribution of vbnc/viable pathogenic bacteria in full-scale drinking water treatment plants

Lizheng Guo et al.

Summary: VBNC bacteria are attracting attention as they cannot be detected by traditional culture-dependent methods and can resuscitate under favorable conditions. This study detected significant quantities of viable/VBNC opportunistic pathogens in full-scale DWTPs, indicating the inadequacy of traditional methods in detecting these bacteria. Development of rapid, accurate methods for detection of VBNC pathogenic bacteria in DWTPs is necessary to ensure drinking water safety.

Summary: This study reports the development and study of an original in-field tryptophan fluorimetric sensor as a potential indicator of real-time microbial contamination in water. The sensor showed good detection sensitivity and linearity in laboratory tests, and exhibited high correlation with coliform bacteria in small-scale in situ tests.

Calibration of an in-situ fluorescence based sensor platform for reliable BOD5 measurement in wastewater

K. Khamis et al.

Summary: Reliance on Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) as an indicator of wastewater quality has hindered development of efficient process control due to uncertainty and lag-times. Surrogate measurements like fluorescence spectroscopy have been proposed, but assessment of in-situ fluorescence sensors across multiple WwTPs is limited. In this study, a multi-parameter sonde was used for BOD5 surrogate measurement, with site-specific sensor calibrations yielding the best results and showing potential for using on-line optical sensors as robust BOD5 surrogates in WwTPs.
