Synthesis and structural investigation of o-Vanillin scaffold Schiff base metal complexes: Biomolecular interaction and molecular docking studies

Shunmugasundaram Gurusamy et al.

Summary: Schiff base metal complexes were synthesized using the ligand (VNP) derived from the condensation reaction of o-Vanillin and N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine. Various techniques were employed to characterize the complexes, and it was found that the complexes exhibited different geometries depending on the metal center. The antibacterial activity of the complexes against different bacterial strains was evaluated, with the VNPCu complex showing the best activity against S. aureus. The complexes also showed antioxidant and DNA cleavage activities, with the VNPCu complex demonstrating the highest activity in both cases. Spectral techniques and molecular docking were used to study the interactions between the ligand and complexes with biomolecules. Overall, the VNPCu complex exhibited the strongest interactions with biomolecules compared to the ligand and other complexes.

Competent DNA binder pentagonal bipyramidal Fe(II) complex executed as a proficient catalyst for primary carbamates production from alcohols and urea

Malay Dolai et al.

Summary: The iron (II) complex [Fe(H2L)(H2O)2](ClO4)2(H2O) (1) with pentagonal bipyramidal geometry has been synthesized and characterized. The interaction between complex 1 and calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was investigated, and an intercalation binding mode with a binding constant of (1.5 +/- 0.06) x 106 M-1 was observed. Furthermore, complex 1 exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the synthesis of primary carbamates, achieving high yields (up to 94%) under mild reaction conditions. The catalytic mechanism was supported by density functional theory (DFT) studies.

Water soluble Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of bidentate-morpholine based ligand: synthesis, spectral, DFT calculation, biological activities and molecular docking studies

Gurusamy Sankararaj Senthilkumar et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel bidentate morpholine-based Schiff base ligand and its copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized using multiple analytical techniques. The results showed that the ligand and complexes possessed a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio, with the azomethine nitrogen and morpholine ring nitrogen atoms in the ligand coordinating with the metal ions. Furthermore, the Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes exhibited a square pyramidal geometry. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes were able to bind to DNA and exhibited good antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. These findings are of significance for the development of new metal complexes and their applications.

Synthesis, spectral, structural, DFT and NLO studies of cerium(III) and thorium(IV) complexes of 1-(5-(1-(2-aminophenylimino)ethyl)-2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)ethanone

Shimaa Abdel Halim et al.

Summary: The reaction of cerium(III) and thorium(IV) nitrates with the Schiff base resulted in the formation of two neutral mononuclear complexes, which were characterized by various analytical techniques. The study found a correlation between the experimental and theoretical study on the molecular structure, thermo-chemical parameters, and vibration frequencies of the complexes. The non-planar geometrically optimized structures of the complexes and the small HOMO-LUMO gap energy suggest a greater reactivity and lower stability of the cerium(III) and thorium(IV) complexes.
