A fattening factor to quantify the accumulation ability of microorganisms under N-starvation

Fabrizio Di Caprio

Summary: This study introduces a new parameter, the "fattening factor," to quantify the strain-specific biomass accumulation ability in bacteria, yeasts, and microalgae, especially under nitrogen starvation conditions. While this parameter can help select high-accumulating strains, there is currently no general parameter available to compare the competitive advantage among different strains.

Modeling and Simulation of Photobioreactors with Computational Fluid Dynamics-A Comprehensive Review

Giovanni Luzi et al.

Summary: This article reviews common photobioreactor types and discusses the processes occurring therein as well as how these processes have been considered in previous CFD models. The analysis reveals that CFD models of photobioreactors often do not consider state-of-the-art modeling approaches. This comprehensive overview provides a unique toolbox for generating CFD models of photobioreactors, and directions for future research are also discussed.

Control of bacterial contamination in microalgae cultures integrated with wastewater treatment by applying feast and famine conditions

Fabrizio Di Caprio et al.

Summary: The integration of microalgae production with wastewater treatment can enhance economic and environmental sustainability. The control of bacterial contamination is a major challenge for this strategy. In this study, a strategy to control bacterial contamination by alternating organic substrate availability was proposed. The results showed that bacteria had a higher growth rate than microalgae but lysed more during the famine phase, reducing contamination. Cell-to-cell heterogeneity in carbon storage was crucial in determining cell resistance to lysis.

Summary: Modelling microalgae dynamics in a photobioreactor is an inexpensive way to determine cell concentration over time, with the potential to improve production processes by retrieving relevant biological information. In this study, a model was developed to determine microalgal dynamics under varying environmental conditions and evaluate the time needed for a full life-cycle, using laboratory-based procedures and mathematical modelling.

Cultivation processes to select microorganisms with high accumulation ability

Fabrizio Di Caprio

Summary: Microbial ability to accumulate biomolecules is crucial for various biotechnological applications, but high accumulation is only advantageous under specific stressful conditions. This study focuses on the physiological responses of microorganisms to N-starvation and energy starvation, aiming to develop tailored bioprocesses for selecting strains with higher accumulation ability. Innovative bioprocess configurations are discussed to maintain selective pressure and reward strains with higher accumulation ability.
