Morbidity and Function Loss After Resection of Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors

Enrico Martin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate postoperative morbidity and the use and outcomes of functional reconstructions in patients with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). The results showed that the incidence of postoperative motor and sensory deficits is still unknown, and the use of functional reconstructions is infrequent.

Management of neurofibromatosis type 1-associated plexiform neurofibromas

Michael J. Fisher et al.

Summary: Plexiform neurofibromas are a common manifestation of neurofibromatosis type 1, with surgery being the main treatment option in the past. However, recent regulatory approvals of the MEK inhibitor selumetinib have provided new options for PN management. Currently, there is no consensus on the definition, diagnostic evaluation, surveillance strategy, and treatment indications for PN. This review provides consensus recommendations from NF1 experts to address these questions.

Fluorescein-guided removal of peripheral nerve sheath tumors: a preliminary analysis of 20 cases

Ignazio G. Vetrano et al.

Summary: Benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs) include schwannomas and neurofibromas. In this study, 20 patients underwent surgery under fluorescein guidance, with a dedicated filter integrated into the surgical microscope and intraoperative monitoring. Fluorescein proved to be a feasible, safe, and helpful intraoperative adjunct for better distinguishing PNSTs from intact nerves, potentially impacting tumor resection particularly in diffuse neurofibromas.

Fluorescent tracers in neurosurgical procedures: a European survey

Francesco Acerbi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the current practice of fluorescence-guided techniques in neuro-oncological surgery in Europe and found that 5-ALA is still the preferred fluorescent dye for resection of high-grade gliomas, while SF is gaining attention as a cheaper and more ductile alternative.

Analysis of the effect of intraoperative neuromonitoring during resection of benign nerve sheath tumors on gross-total resection and neurological complications

Thomas J. Wilson et al.

Summary: The study found that intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) had a negative impact on achieving GTR but was not associated with postoperative neurological complications. In the subset of motor/mixed nerve tumors, IONM was a significant negative predictor of GTR and a significant positive predictor of permanent postoperative motor deficit.
