Special issue The advance of solid tumor research in China: Multi-omics analysis based on 1311 clear cell renal cell carcinoma samples identifies a glycolysis signature associated with prognosis and treatment response

Xi Tian et al.

Summary: In clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), increased glycolysis is observed due to elevated expression of key enzymes. This study aimed to identify molecular biomarkers for glycolysis to improve diagnosis and treatment of ccRCC. Analysis of tumor samples and proteomic profiles revealed differences in immune cells, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, and tumor mutation burden between low and high glycolysis groups. Higher glycolysis was associated with worse overall survival and could predict treatment response. GlyScore may serve as a potential biomarker for prognosis and treatment response in ccRCC.

Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Correlation between PD-1/PD-L1 expression and polarization in tumor-associated macrophages: A key player in tumor immunotherapy

Wei Li et al.

Summary: This review outlines the relationship between PD-1/PD-L1 expression and polarization in tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), and the involvement of M2 TAMs in PD-1/PD-L1-mediated T-cell exhaustion. It also discusses improved approaches for overcoming PD-1/PD-L1 blockade resistance by inducing M2/M1 switching of TAMs.

Deciphering the role of miR-187-3p/LRFN1 axis in modulating progression, aerobic glycolysis and immune microenvironment of clear cell renal cell carcinoma

Wenhao Xu et al.

Summary: This study revealed the tumor-specific and immunological role of the miR-187-3p/LRFN1 axis in the progression and reshaping of the tumor immune microenvironment in ccRCC. Up-regulation of miR-187-3p suppressed proliferation and migration while promoting apoptosis in ccRCC cells. LRFN1 rescued proliferation and invasion capacities after miR-187-3p mimic transfection. Additionally, LRFN1 expression served as an independent potential biomarker for prognosis in ccRCC patients and promoted intra-tumoral heterogeneity and immune-infiltrating microenvironment.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Cepharanthine inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma cell growth and proliferation by regulating amino acid metabolism and suppresses tumorigenesis in vivo

Fan Feng et al.

Summary: Cepharanthine (CEP), extracted from Stephania cepharantha Hayata, has shown potential in treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by inhibiting cell migration, proliferation, and inducing apoptosis. Through RNA-seq and GC-MS, CEP was found to affect metabolism-associated pathways and down-regulate metabolites, leading to significant antitumor effects in both in vitro and in vivo experiments.
