A review of bio-refining process intensification in catalytic conversion reactions, separations and purifications of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural

Jernej Slak et al.

Summary: This review explores the utilization of process intensification (PI) techniques in the biorefining industry for 5-HMF and FUR production and purification, highlighting the potential of reactive extraction in microreactors and other approaches. While mineral acid-catalyzed aqueous systems yield the highest product yields, their purification and recycling are costly and laborious. Solid-acid catalysts in biphasic solvent systems show promise, with NaCl improving extraction power and selectivity. The pervaporation assisted continuous membrane reactor holds potential for large-scale FUR production.

Kinetic study on the impact of acidity and acid concentration on the formation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), humins, and levulinic acid in the hydrothermal conversion of fructose

Dennis Jung et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of acidity on the kinetic parameters of fructose hydrothermal conversion, revealing a non-linear relationship between the dehydration of fructose to HMF and the rehydration of HMF to LA with proton concentration. The formation rate of humins, on the other hand, shows a linear dependence on proton concentration with low sensitivity.

The formation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and hydrochar during the valorization of biomass using a microwave hydrothermal method

Yuchao Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the production of HMF and LA in the liquid phase and that of insoluble humins under microwave heating in acidic seawater. The selectivities for HMF and LA decreased as the reaction time increased, with dehydration and decarboxylation dominating the production of hydrochar.

Selective fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from a fructose-glucose mixture over a sulfuric acid catalyst in a biphasic system: Experimental study and kinetic modelling

Wenze Guo et al.

Summary: This research successfully demonstrated a two-step process of converting glucose to fructose followed by dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), with insights into the excess formation of formic acid in the process. By optimizing the conditions based on the developed kinetic model, the synthesis of HMF was efficiently achieved in microreactors, showing potential for process intensification and scale-up.
