Effects of fluid film properties on fouling in biphasic flow systems

Jiaqi Dong et al.

Summary: Flow chemistry has the potential to improve the accessibility of precision-engineered nano materials on a large scale. The use of liquid-liquid segmented flow method can reduce or eliminate reactor fouling, but guidelines for materials selection and system design are lacking. This study investigated the application of two biphasic flow systems in continuous gold nanoparticle synthesis, showing that the silicone oil-water system had lower polydispersity index and higher reaction yield.

A comparative analysis of micro-mixing process in a confined impinging jet reactor with/without applying ultrasound

Luming Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of ultrasound intensification on the mixing processes in a confined impinging jet reactor (CIJR) were investigated using experimental and numerical methods. The numerical results were validated through experiments and the model was coupled with chemical reactions for the first time. It was found that the collapse of acoustic microbubbles and turbulence-like acoustic streaming generated local eddies that significantly reduced the micro-mixing time. Increasing the power of ultrasound was found to increase the micro-mixing efficiency. The effect of ultrasound intensification on the meso-mixing process was larger than that on the micro-mixing process near the transducer head.

Flow synthesis of PVP capped gold nanoparticles in capillary microreactor

Nirvik Sen et al.

Summary: Flow synthesis of ultrafine colloidal gold nanoparticles below 5 nm in size is achieved in a microreactor. Factors such as residence time, reaction temperature, citrate to gold ratio, presence of additional stabilizing agent, and gas induced flow segmentation are investigated for their effects on particle size and polydispersity index. The results show that longer residence time, higher reduction temperature, presence of PVP, and gas induced flow segmentation can lead to smaller and more monodispersed AuNP.
