XGBLC: an improved survival prediction model based on XGBoost

Baoshan Ma et al.

Summary: This study proposed an improved survival prediction model XGBLC based on the XGBoost framework, using Lasso-Cox to enhance the ability to analyze high-dimensional genomic data. Tested on 20 cancer datasets, XGBLC outperforms five state-of-the-art survival methods in terms of C-index, Brier score, and AUC.

Copper induces cell death by targeting lipoylated TCA cycle proteins

Peter Tsvetkov et al.

Summary: Copper is an essential cofactor for all organisms, but excessive copper can lead to cell death. We found that copper-dependent cell death mechanism is different from known mechanisms, and it is related to mitochondrial respiration. Copper directly binds to lipoylated components of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, causing protein aggregation and loss of iron-sulfur cluster proteins, ultimately leading to cell death.

Prompt Resumption of Screening Programme Reduced the Impact of COVID-19 on New Breast Cancer Diagnoses in Northern Italy

Lucia Mangone et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the differences in age, stage, and treatment between 2020 and 2019 tumors. The results showed no decrease in invasive and in situ tumors in 2020, but there was a significant decrease in surgery and an increase in neoadjuvant chemotherapy. During the lockdown period, tumor numbers decreased in all age groups, especially among those aged 75 and above. Screening activities were suspended from March to May but resumed later and addressed the backlog. This suggests that a prompt resumption of programmed screening may have limited the impact of the pandemic on the delay of breast cancer diagnoses.

Connecting copper and cancer: from transition metal signalling to metalloplasia

Eva J. Ge et al.

Summary: Copper is a essential nutrient with both beneficial and toxic properties to cells. Recent progress in transition metal signaling has led to new connections between researchers from different disciplines, with potential for translating basic research into clinical therapies for diseases. The relationship between copper and cancer is particularly important, with opportunities for leveraging disease vulnerabilities through copper-dependent signaling pathways.

Mitochondrial copper depletion suppresses triple-negative breast cancer in mice

Liyang Cui et al.

Summary: The research developed a mitochondria-targeted copper-depleting nanoparticle that effectively inhibited the growth of triple-negative breast cancer cells and improved survival rates in mouse models. By depriving copper within cancer cells, this approach induced metabolic changes and apoptosis, highlighting its potential clinical relevance.
