Extracellular vesicle-mediated bidirectional communication between heart and other organs

Khatia Gabisonia et al.

Summary: In recent research, various molecular species released by the cardiac muscle have been identified to have important physiological and pathological effects. Conversely, humoral factors produced by organs like skeletal muscle, kidney, or adipose tissue may affect the function and metabolism of normal and diseased hearts. Extracellular vesicles, such as exosomes, microvesicles, and apoptotic bodies, carry proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids that can have potent biological effects on recipient cells. Although research on the role of these mediators is at an early stage, it is already revealing their importance.

Exosomes as a messager to regulate the crosstalk between macrophages and cardiomyocytes under hypoxia conditions

Zenglei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the interaction between cardiomyocytes and macrophages through exosome communication. The exosomes secreted by cardiomyocytes can influence the activation state of macrophages, and macrophage polarization can in turn affect the survival of hypoxic cardiomyocytes. These findings suggest that exosomes play a crucial role in modulating inflammatory response and oxidative stress injury in the heart.

The Peripheral Circulating Exosomal microRNAs Related to Central Inflammation in Chronic Heart Failure

Yu-Chen Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of exosomal miRNAs on central inflammation in chronic heart failure (CHF) through peripheral-central interaction. The results showed that miR-214-3p enhanced the inflammatory response, while let-7g-5p and let-7i-5p reduced neuroinflammation. The regulation of these miRNAs may have important implications for the treatment of CHF.

Exosome Processing and Characterization Approaches for Research and Technology Development

James J. Lai et al.

Summary: Exosomes, as extracellular vesicles, have potential as disease biomarkers and therapeutic agents. However, manufacturing high-quality exosomes is challenging due to the lack of standardized practices and reference materials. This review compares exosome processing and characterization methods, recommends exosome workflows, and provides an introduction to exosomes, including their properties and roles in biological processes and disease progression. It also summarizes ongoing clinical trials.

Heart-targeting exosomes from human cardiosphere-derived cells improve the therapeutic effect on cardiac hypertrophy

Liang Mao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of heart homing peptide (HHP) displayed exosomes from human cardiosphere-derived cells (CDCs) to enhance the therapeutic effect on myocardial hypertrophy. The HHP-exosomes showed higher accumulation in the heart and improved cardiac function and remodeling in mouse models. This beneficial effect is likely mediated through the miRNA-148a-mediated suppression of GP130 signaling pathway.
