Oxidative Stress Measurement in Frozen/Thawed Human Sperm: The Protective Role of an In Vitro Treatment with Myo-Inositol

Rosetta Ponchia et al.

Summary: Despite the widespread use of sperm cryopreservation, it can cause detrimental alterations in sperm function, including decreased viability, motility, and DNA fragmentation. Oxidative stress appears to play a prominent role in the mechanisms of human sperm cryodamage. Antioxidants such as myo-inositol have been shown to minimize the detrimental effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and improve sperm quality and motility. This study demonstrated that post-thaw addition of myo-inositol significantly improved sperm parameters, increased oxygen consumption, and decreased carbonyl groups, indicating reduced oxidative stress. These findings suggest that the developed sperm cryopreservation procedure may improve current in vitro techniques used for sperm cryostorage in assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratories.

Ferroptosis and Acute Kidney Injury (AKI): Molecular Mechanisms and Therapeutic Potentials

Qi Feng et al.

Summary: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and serious kidney disease, and its development is closely related to ferroptosis, an iron-dependent nonapoptotic cell death. However, the exact mechanism of ferroptosis in AKI has not been fully revealed.

Summary: This article summarizes the characteristics of nephrotoxicity in cisplatin treatment, the pathophysiological mechanisms of kidney injury, and the current research on pharmacological treatment options to reduce AKI. Despite years of research, interventions, and clinical trials, there is still a lack of consistent pharmacological treatment options for cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury.

Oxidative Stress and Male Fertility: Role of Antioxidants and Inositols

Maria Nunzia De Luca et al.

Summary: Infertility is a global health problem affecting approximately 187 million couples worldwide, with oxidative stress being a common reason for male infertility. Antioxidant supplementation is considered effective in improving male fertility parameters due to their synergistic effects in decreasing ROS concentration. Additionally, natural molecules such as myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol play a role in ameliorating sperm quality by regulating various cellular mechanisms.

Summary: Regulated cell death (RCD), which is distinct from accidental cell death, is a well-controlled programmed cell death process with defined pathological mechanisms. The term RCD encompasses various types of cell death, some of which have been implicated in the pathogenesis of acute kidney injury (AKI), such as cisplatin-induced AKI.
