Single Application of Low-Dose, Hydroxyapatite-Bound BMP-2 or GDF-5 Induces Long-Term Bone Formation and Biomechanical Stabilization of a Bone Defect in a Senile Sheep Lumbar Osteopenia Model

Ines Hasenbein et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of hydroxyapatite (HA) particles with bone morphogenetic BMP-2 or GDF-5 on lumbar osteopenia in sheep. The results showed that combined use of HA particles with these growth factors significantly increased bone formation and biomechanical stabilization, which suggests their potential value in spinal fusion/bone regeneration treatment.

Mechanical Stretch Induced Osteogenesis on Human Annulus Fibrosus Cells through Upregulation of BMP-2/6 Heterodimer and Activation of P38 and SMAD1/5/8 Signaling Pathways

Cheng-Nan Chen et al.

Summary: Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a significant cause of low back pain. This study found that mechanical stretching can induce the expression of markers related to osteogenesis, potentially accelerating the progression of intervertebral disc degeneration.

Carrier systems for bone morphogenetic proteins: An overview of biomaterials used for dentoalveolar and maxillofacial bone regeneration

Alain Arias-Betancur et al.

Summary: Different types of biomaterials have been used to fabricate carriers for bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in dental and maxillofacial bone regeneration procedures. Absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) is considered the gold standard, but its poor mechanical properties are a concern. Novel systems are being developed, but there is still no consensus on which is more efficient in specific clinical scenarios.
