Transport and Toxicity of Methylmercury-Cysteine in Cultured BeWo Cells

Srividya Ganapathy et al.

Summary: This study assessed the transport of MeHg into placental syncytiotrophoblasts and characterized the mechanisms by which it exerts toxic effects. MeHg compounds were found to be transported into cells primarily by sodium-independent amino acid carriers and organic anion transporters. MeHg altered mitochondrial function and viability, decreased mitophagy and autophagy, and increased oxidative stress. Exposure to higher concentrations of MeHg inhibited the ability of cells to protect against MeHg-induced injury.

Presence of nano-sized mercury-containing particles in seafoods, and an estimate of dietary exposure

Yoshinari Suzuki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation of nano-sized particles of mercury (NP-Hg) in fish and shellfish, which are the main sources of human exposure to mercury. The results showed that NP-Hg was present in almost all fish samples, with higher concentrations observed in tuna and swordfish. The study also estimated the dietary exposure to NP-Hg in Japanese people and found it to be relatively low, indicating a small health risk from redissolved inorganic mercury.

Mercury bioaccessibility in fish and seafood: Effect of method, cooking and trophic level on consumption risk assessment

Filipe Costa et al.

Summary: This study assessed the bioaccessible fraction of mercury in fish and seafood commonly found in the Mediterranean diet using three different in vitro extraction methods. The results showed that each extraction method yielded different results, indicating the lack of a universal methodology for estimating mercury bioaccessibility in these matrices. The bioaccessible mercury fraction was highest in predator species and was significantly reduced during cooking procedures. Additionally, the study found that the bioaccessible mercury in ingested fish and seafood was far below the levels set by current safety risk assessment legislation.

Oxygen as an important factor modulating in vitro MeHgCl toxicity associated with mitochondrial genes in hiPSCs

J. Augustyniak et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers used hiPSCs to investigate the mitochondrial toxicity of MeHgCl under different oxygen concentrations. They found that MeHgCl induced cellular toxicity by altering mitochondrial-associated genes in an oxygen level-dependent manner. This study suggests that the predictive value of toxicity studies could be affected by the atmospheric oxygen conditions commonly used in in vitro culture.

Mercury concentrations in tuna blood and muscle mirror seawater methylmercury in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean

Romina V. Barbosa et al.

Summary: Understanding the relationship between mercury in seafood and the distribution of oceanic methylmercury is important for understanding human mercury exposure. This study found similar latitudinal patterns of mercury concentrations in the muscle and blood of bigeye and yellowfin tunas, indicating that both tissues are suitable for monitoring mercury levels. The analysis of different tuna species showed species- and tissue-specific mercury patterns, suggesting variations in mercury uptake and accumulation processes associated with their vertical habitat.

Mercury concentrations in tuna blood and muscle mirror seawater methylmercury in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean

Romina V. Barbosa et al.

Summary: Understanding the relationship between mercury in seafood and oceanic methylmercury distribution is crucial for human mercury exposure assessment. Mercury concentrations in bigeye and yellowfin tunas from the Western and Central Pacific showed similar latitudinal patterns in blood and muscle, suggesting both tissues are suitable for mercury monitoring. The correlation between tuna mercury content and ambient seawater methylmercury concentrations highlights the importance of considering dissolved methylmercury uptake in addition to food assimilation in modeling mercury levels in tuna.

Summary: The study investigated the embryotoxic effects of selected pharmacological compounds using human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived embryoid bodies. The compounds repressed cell growth, compromised morphology, and triggered apoptosis in the embryoid bodies. Gene expression analysis revealed dysregulation associated with brain and heart disorders, indicating the potential for using this in vitro platform for embryotoxicity screening.

Multi-omics phenotyping of the gut-liver axis reveals metabolic perturbations from a low-dose pesticide mixture in rats

Robin Mesnage et al.

Summary: The study revealed that standard regulatory toxicity tests may not accurately detect the health effects of pesticides, but in-depth multi-omics analysis can reveal metabolic perturbations. Low concentrations of pesticides were found to potentially trigger oxidative stress responses, affect gene expression in the liver, and lead to changes in DNA methylation.
