Organ-on-a-Chip Platforms for Drug Screening and Delivery in Tumor Cells: A Systematic Review

Ines M. Goncalves et al.

Summary: Developing cancer models that overcome the limitations of monolayer or static cell cultures and more accurately replicate the human system than animal models has been a challenge in biomedical research. Organ-on-a-chip (OoC) devices, combining microfluidics and cell culture, have emerged as a potential solution. This systematic review summarizes studies from the past decade that used OoC with cancer cell cultures for drug screening assays.

Targeting OCT3 attenuates doxorubicin-induced cardiac injury

Kevin M. Huang et al.

Summary: By studying the critical transporter OCT3 for doxorubicin accumulation in the heart, researchers have revealed the mechanism of doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, providing a theoretical basis for a targeted intervention strategy to prevent this side effect.

Hepatocellular carcinoma

Josep M. Llovet et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), poses a significant global health challenge with rising incidence projected to exceed 1 million cases by 2025. Infection by hepatitis B and C viruses remains a major risk factor for HCC, while non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is emerging as a more common risk factor in Western countries. Advances in systemic therapies for HCC, including immunotherapies and targeted therapies, are expected to revolutionize the management of this disease.

The Effects of Association of Topical Polydatin Improves the Preemptive Systemic Treatment on EGFR Inhibitors Cutaneous Adverse Reactions

Mauro Bavetta et al.

Summary: Polydatin, a topical product containing glycosylated polyphenol, has been shown to be effective in preventing and treating skin papulopustular rash in EGFRi-treated patients, leading to significant improvement in patients' quality of life. Additionally, no cutaneous adverse events related to the use of polydatin were reported in the study, suggesting its safety and efficacy in managing skin manifestations in cancer patients undergoing EGFRi treatment.

Chromosomal instability sensitizes patient breast tumors to multipolar divisions induced by paclitaxel

Christina M. Scribano et al.

Summary: Paclitaxel is a key drug in cancer treatment, but not all patients benefit from it due to incomplete understanding of its cytotoxic mechanism. Research shows that breast cancer patients may not accumulate enough paclitaxel in tumor cells to induce mitotic arrest, leading to multipolar mitotic spindle formation instead. Preexisting chromosomal instability in breast cancer cells can sensitize them to paclitaxel treatment, suggesting the potential of using baseline rates of chromosomal instability as a predictive biomarker for paclitaxel response.

Polydatin Reduces Cardiotoxicity and Enhances the Anticancer Effects of Sunitinib by Decreasing Pro-Oxidative Stress, Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines, and NLRP3 Inflammasome Expression

Vincenzo Quagliariello et al.

Summary: Polydatin has potential cardioprotective and chemosensitizing effects during Sunitinib treatment by reducing oxidative stress and key chemokines related to cancer cell survival and chemoresistance. Through modulation of inflammatory responses and signaling pathways, it can act as a nutraceutical agent in preventive cardio-oncology studies.

Polydatin Counteracts 5-Fluorouracil Resistance by Enhancing Apoptosis via Calcium Influx in Colon Cancer

Hyocheol Bae et al.

Summary: The study found that polydatin can suppress the progression of colon cancer, induce anti-cancer effects by modifying cell cycle distribution and causing mitochondrial dysfunction. It can also overcome drug resistance by inhibiting signaling pathways and enhancing chemosensitivity, potentially serving as an innovative medicinal drug for colon cancer treatment.
