Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Needle tract seeding after endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition of pancreatic tumors: Nationwide survey in Japan

Masayuki Kitano et al.

Summary: This study investigated the current status of needle tract seeding (NTS) after endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) of pancreatic tumors. The results showed that the NTS rate was significantly higher in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs) than in those with other tumors, and NTS was observed more frequently in patients who underwent transgastric EUS-TA. For PDAC patients with NTS, timely resection could prolong their survival.

Summary: Endosonography-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNA)-associated metachronous gastric seeding metastases (GSM) of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) can be preventable and curable, requiring follow-up and multimodal management.

Needle Tract Seeding after Endoscopic Ultrasound Tissue Acquisition of Pancreatic Lesions: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Antonio Facciorusso et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study demonstrates that the incidence of needle tract seeding (NTS) after endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) is very low in both pancreatic adenocarcinoma and cystic pancreatic lesions. Additionally, there is no difference in terms of metachronous peritoneal dissemination between patients who underwent EUS-TA and non-sampled patients. Therefore, EUS-TA can be safely performed in a pre-operative setting.

Adverse events of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration for histologic diagnosis in Japanese tertiary centers: Multicenter retrospective study

Atsushi Kanno et al.

Summary: The study revealed that adverse events related to EUS-FNA for histopathologic diagnoses were uncommon, with low incidence rates of bleeding and pancreatitis being the main concerns. Bleeding was the most common adverse event, but in most cases, blood transfusion was not required.

Summary: EUS-FNA is a commonly used biopsy technique for diagnosing pancreatic tumors due to its high sensitivity and specificity, but careful consideration should be given to its indications to avoid iatrogenic dissemination in patients with cancer in the pancreatic body or tail.

Summary: PDAC is a highly aggressive cancer with unique tumor microenvironment, which can reprogram metabolism to adapt to the harsh conditions and develop therapeutic resistance. PDAC cells survive in the hostile environment by using non-canonical metabolic pathways and scavenging pathways.

Summary: This cross-sectional study projected cancer incidences and deaths in the United States up to 2040. The findings indicate significant changes in the most common cancers by 2040, with breast cancer projected to become the most common cancer and lung cancer remaining the leading cause of cancer-related death.

Histopathological evaluation of needle tract seeding caused by EUS-fine-needle biopsy based on resected specimens from patients with solid pancreatic masses: An analysis of 73 consecutive cases

Ryosuke Nakatsubo et al.

Summary: This study reviewed 73 cases of pancreatic tumors that underwent EUS-FNB preoperative examination and surgery, finding a high diagnostic accuracy of 98.6% for EUS-FNB but with the risk of NTS. Caution should be exercised in considering the use of EUS-FNB in patients with resectable solid pancreatic masses.

Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma, Version 2.2021

Summary: Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, with a major challenge being advanced disease at diagnosis. While survival rates have not significantly changed, newer treatments, including targeted therapies, offer hope for patients. The manuscript focuses on systemic therapy approaches for locally advanced and metastatic disease.
