The Effect of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Hepatocellular Cancer on Regional Hepatic Liver Function

Lise Wei et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between direct radiation dose-related and inflammation-mediated regional hepatic function losses after stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and poor liver function. The results showed that regional hepatic function losses after SBRT in patients with HCC include both direct radiation dose-dependent and inflammation-mediated effects.

Contrast-enhanced 4D-MRI for internal target volume generation in treatment planning for liver tumors

Horatio R. Thomas et al.

Summary: This study assessed the application of multiple 4D-MRI binning algorithms for visualizing liver tumor motion. The two-directional binning algorithm showed equal or better image quality compared to phase binning, and it captured a larger range of hysteresis compared to amplitude binning. Additionally, the study found that the coverage of radiation plans using MR-derived targets was significantly lower than plans using CT-derived targets.

Imaging Features in the Liver after Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy

Patrick J. Navin et al.

Summary: Radiation therapy was historically not commonly used in the treatment of liver tumors due to the risk of radiation-induced liver disease. However, advancements in highly conformal radiation treatments such as stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) have increased its use in liver treatment. SBRT is effective in treating primary and metastatic liver tumors, but changes in tumor response may be delayed due to the physiological effects of radiation. Understanding the imaging features of radiation-induced change in the surrounding liver parenchyma is crucial in accurately evaluating tumor response and avoiding misinterpretation.

Summary: This study showed that individualized adaptive treatment approach can achieve good local control while limiting toxicity in patients with HCC and CTP-B liver disease. Higher treatment dose was associated with improved freedom from local progression, but increasing mean liver dose may lead to larger increases in CTP score. Further research is needed to optimize treatment in patients with compromised liver function.

Evaluating dose constraints for radiation induced liver damage following magnetic resonance image guided Stereotactic Body radiotherapy

Poonam Yadav et al.

Summary: This study examines the dose of visible radiation-induced liver damage following SBRT for liver metastasis and optimal timing for post-radiation imaging. Using diagnostic MR scans of nine patients, a median dose of 35 Gy was found to correlate most closely with visible liver damage. The study suggests that the maximal dice coefficients occur at two to five months post-radiation, providing valuable information for developing treatment planning guidelines for liver SBRT.
