Viral Pathogens in Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer

Kishen Rajendra et al.

Summary: Tumour virology studies viral pathogens that cause cancer, with approximately 20% of human cancers having a viral etiology. Different viruses play roles at different stages of carcinogenesis and may require co-factors. Oesophageal and gastric malignancies are associated with multiple risk factors, including human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and Helicobacter pylori (HP). Viral antigen expression in tumors offers potential for prevention and therapy, as demonstrated by successful vaccines for HPV and HBV.

The KEAP1-NRF2 System and Esophageal Cancer

Wataru Hirose et al.

Summary: NRF2-activated or NRF2-addicted cancers have a high incidence, especially in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Understanding the mechanistic basis of NRF2 function in NRF2-addicted cancer cells is critically important for the development of effective treatments for NRF2-addicted esophageal cancers, which are largely resistant to current treatments.

Genome-Wide DNA Methylation and Gene Expression Profiling Characterizes Molecular Subtypes of Esophagus Squamous Cell Carcinoma for Predicting Patient Survival and Immunotherapy Efficacy

Yulong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study identifies molecular subtypes of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and demonstrates that the S1 subtype has a higher response rate to immunotherapy compared to the S2 subtype. These findings provide new insights for improving the treatment of ESCC.

A Clinical Nomogram for Predicting Node-positive Disease in Esophageal Cancer

Tara R. Semenkovich et al.

Summary: A nomogram predicting the likelihood of occult lymph node metastases in esophageal cancer patients was developed using NCDB data, incorporating variables like histology, tumor stage, size, grade, and lymphovascular invasion. The nomogram demonstrated good predictive accuracy and could potentially enhance preoperative risk assessment.
