Impact of sarcopenia and myosteatosis on survival outcomes for patients with head and neck cancer undergoing curative-intent treatment

Summary: Malnutrition and sarcopenia are common in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients. Pre-treatment sarcopenia and its relation to poor oncological outcomes are well understood, but the impact of myosteatosis and post-treatment sarcopenia remains unclear. This study found that post-treatment sarcopenia, especially in those with myosteatosis, is associated with worse 5-year survival. Post-treatment sarcopenia should be evaluated as an independent risk factor for decreased long-term survival in patients undergoing radiotherapy for HNSCC.

Summary: This study investigates the predictive value of skeletal muscle mass (SMM) for cisplatin dose-limiting toxicities (DLT) in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer (LA-HNC). The results show that low SMM is associated with an increased risk of DLT and suggest the need for further trials to consider SMM in cisplatin dosing.

Summary: Background: We aimed to determine the role of low cervical paraspinal skeletal muscle index (CPSMI) as a biomarker for poor treatment tolerance in patients with operable mucosal head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Results: The study showed that low CPSMI is independently associated with poor treatment tolerance and delayed adjuvant therapy in patients with operable HNSCC.
