Impact of sarcopenia and myosteatosis on survival outcomes for patients with head and neck cancer undergoing curative-intent treatment

Elizabeth Ahern et al.

Summary: Malnutrition and sarcopenia are common in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients. Pre-treatment sarcopenia and its relation to poor oncological outcomes are well understood, but the impact of myosteatosis and post-treatment sarcopenia remains unclear. This study found that post-treatment sarcopenia, especially in those with myosteatosis, is associated with worse 5-year survival. Post-treatment sarcopenia should be evaluated as an independent risk factor for decreased long-term survival in patients undergoing radiotherapy for HNSCC.

Image-based analysis of skeletal muscle mass predicts cisplatin dose-limiting toxicity in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer

Najiba Chargi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the predictive value of skeletal muscle mass (SMM) for cisplatin dose-limiting toxicities (DLT) in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer (LA-HNC). The results show that low SMM is associated with an increased risk of DLT and suggest the need for further trials to consider SMM in cisplatin dosing.

Poor treatment tolerance in head and neck cancer patients with low muscle mass

Marco A. Mascarella et al.

Summary: Background: We aimed to determine the role of low cervical paraspinal skeletal muscle index (CPSMI) as a biomarker for poor treatment tolerance in patients with operable mucosal head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Results: The study showed that low CPSMI is independently associated with poor treatment tolerance and delayed adjuvant therapy in patients with operable HNSCC.

The effectiveness of skeletal muscle evaluation at the third cervical vertebral level for computed tomography-defined sarcopenia assessment in patients with head and neck cancer

Belinda Vangelov et al.

Summary: This study compared the use of cross-sectional area (CSA) measurements at the third cervical vertebra (C3) and the third lumbar vertebra (L3) to evaluate the muscle status in head and neck cancer patients. The results showed weak agreement between the two methods, indicating that using C3 to estimate CSA cannot replace actual measurements at L3.

Skeletal Muscle Depletion and Major Postoperative Complications in Locally-Advanced Head and Neck Cancer: A Comparison between Ultrasound of Rectus Femoris Muscle and Neck Cross-Sectional Imaging

Andrea Galli et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the value of ultrasound scans and CT/MRI in estimating skeletal muscle mass and identifying sarcopenic patients in a cohort of head and neck cancer patients. These methods can also serve as predictors of major surgical morbidity and aid in pre-habilitation strategies to reduce postoperative complications.

Masseter muscle parameters can function as an alternative for skeletal muscle mass assessments on cross-sectional imaging a lumbar or cervical vertebral levels

Hugo C. van Heusden et al.

Summary: Low skeletal muscle mass is common in patients with head and neck cancer. This study found a moderate to strong association between masseter muscle volume and C3 and L3 skeletal muscle cross sectional area (CSA), and masseter skeletal muscle index predicts overall survival.

Alcohol and Head and Neck Cancer: Updates on the Role of Oxidative Stress, Genetic, Epigenetics, Oral Microbiota, Antioxidants, and Alkylating Agents

Giampiero Ferraguti et al.

Summary: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a disease that affects more than 890,000 patients worldwide annually and is associated with advanced stage and severe outcomes. Alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking, and human papillomavirus infection are the main risk factors. This article discusses the mechanisms of alcohol in HNC and suggests prevention strategies, such as polyphenol supplements and alkylating drugs.

Impact of sarcopenia on acute radiation-induced toxicity in head and neck cancer patients

Eleftheria Karavolia et al.

Summary: This study found that sarcopenia is an independent prognostic factor for radiation-induced acute grade >= 3 dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients. However, adding sarcopenia to the current normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models did not improve the performance of these models.

Summary: This study is the first to demonstrate from the perspective of the German healthcare system that the addition of chemotherapy to radiotherapy is cost-effective and does not result in a significant decline in health-related quality of life in selected elderly head and neck cancer patients.

Radiologically Defined Sarcopenia Affects Survival in Head and Neck Cancer: A Meta-Analysis

Amanda Wong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether radiologically defined sarcopenia at the C3 or L3 level is prognostic of overall survival in head and neck cancer patients. After analyzing multiple articles, it was concluded that sarcopenia is a negative predictor of OS in these patients, suggesting that early detection may improve treatment outcomes.

Development and validation of a novel prognostic score for elderly head-and-neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiation

Alexander Ruehle et al.

Summary: A novel prognostic score and nomogram were established based on easily accessible clinical data for elderly head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma patients undergoing (chemo)radiotherapy. The score differentiated between different prognostic groups based on reduced performance status, increased comorbidity burden, and elevated CRP levels. The developed tools may assist in decision-making for this vulnerable population.

Summary: Measuring muscle area at the level of cervical vertebra C3 on head and neck CT imaging can effectively reflect muscle area at the level of lumbar vertebra L3, providing some reference value for evaluating patients' skeletal muscle mass.

Impact of preoperative sarcopenia and myosteatosis on prognosis after radical cystectomy in patients with bladder cancer

Shimpei Yamashita et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prognostic impact of sarcopenia and myosteatosis on survival after radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. The results showed that patients with sarcopenia and myosteatosis had significantly lower overall survival and cancer-specific survival rates. Additionally, sarcopenia and myosteatosis were independent predictors of poor cancer-specific survival in these patients.

Surviving Elderly Patients with Head-and-Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma-What Is the Long-Term Quality of Life after Curative Radiotherapy?

Alexander Ruehle et al.

Summary: The study found that elderly head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients treated with radiotherapy exhibit a relatively high long-term global quality of life comparable to the general German population. Patients with HPV-induced HNSCC showed superior long-term global quality of life compared to HPV-negative patients, and concomitant chemotherapy did not negatively impact long-term quality of life.
