The effect of melatonin on reduction in the need for sedative agents and duration of mechanical ventilation in traumatic intracranial hemorrhage patients: a randomized controlled trial

Farhad Soltani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of exogenous melatonin on sedative drugs and mechanical ventilation duration in traumatic intracranial hemorrhage patients in ICU. The results showed that the melatonin group had significantly lower morphine consumption and mechanical ventilation time compared to the control group. Additionally, the melatonin group had a faster rise in Glasgow Coma Score.

Prophylactic melatonin for delirium in intensive care (Pro-MEDIC): a randomized controlled trial

Summary: Administration of melatonin within 48 hours of ICU admission does not decrease the prevalence of delirium in critically ill patients, and thus routine early use of melatonin is not supported.

Hemoperfusion and blood purification strategies in patients with COVID-19: A systematic review

Filippo Sanfilippo et al.

Summary: The evidence regarding the role of HP therapy in COVID-19 is inconclusive due to the low quality of included studies. Most studies reported a decrease in IL-6 levels after HP treatment, but there was a wide variability in techniques and outcomes reported. Prospective randomized data are needed to draw strong conclusions.

Summary: Melatonin/ramelteon significantly reduced delirium incidence in hospitalized patients, especially in surgical and ICU patients. However, their impact on delirium duration, length of hospital stay, length of ICU stay, and mortality was not significant.
