Are Serum Ferritin Levels a Reliable Cancer Biomarker? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Wilmer Ramirez-Carmona et al.

Summary: The systematic review found that SF levels were higher in patients with cancer, especially in head and neck cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and renal cell carcinoma patients. In advanced stages of tumors, ferritin levels were significantly higher than in healthy adults. SF acts as a sensitive biomarker for the detection of advanced stages of cancer.

Low transferrin levels predict heightened inflammation in patients with COVID-19: New insights

Catherine Claise et al.

Summary: The study found that severe COVID-19 patients have low serum iron levels and high ferritin levels. Transferrin is strongly associated with the inflammatory and immune state of the disease and can be used as a predictor of disease severity and progression.

Binding of ruthenium and osmium at non-iron sites of transferrin accounts for their iron-independent cellular uptake

Minji Wang et al.

Summary: Ruthenium and osmium compounds are potential drug candidates with lower toxicity and selective effects for solid tumor metastases. Human serum proteins, such as albumin and transferrin, play important roles in the transportation and accumulation of ruthenium and osmium agents. The cellular uptake of Os3+ or Ru3+ is not competed by Fe3+. Crystal structures of human serum transferrin (hTF) in complex with ruthenium and osmium compounds reveal the binding sites on the surface of hTF. These findings contribute to the understanding of how serum transferrin is involved in cellular delivery of ruthenium and osmium anticancer agents.

Towards a Common Definition for the Diagnosis of Iron Deficiency in Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

Patrice Cacoub et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency is common in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases, but under-diagnosis is frequent due to heterogeneity in medical society guidelines. This study found that applying a common definition for iron deficiency improved diagnosis rates in patients with cancer, heart failure, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Worldwide Burden, Risk Factors, and Temporal Trends of Ovarian Cancer: A Global Study

Junjie Huang et al.

Summary: Ovarian cancer is one of the most common gynecological cancers globally, with its risk increasing with age, family history, family cancer syndrome, and breast cancer susceptibility gene mutations. The burden of ovarian cancer is increasing among younger females in some countries. Therefore, investigating the latest incidence and mortality rates, risk factors, and epidemiological trends of ovarian cancer is crucial.

Controversial Role of Transferrin in the Transport of Ruthenium Anticancer Drugs

Aviva Levina et al.

Summary: Ruthenium complexes are important in the development of metal-based anticancer drugs. This study investigates the interactions of the anticancer drugs KP1019 and [Ru-III(nta)(2)](3-) with transferrin in biological media and their cellular uptake in human hepatoma cells. The results show that the mode of transferrin binding and cellular uptake of ruthenium depend on the nature of the ruthenium complex and the availability of iron binding sites on transferrin, as well as the presence of competing proteins.

Iron Metabolism in the Tumor Microenvironment-Implications for Anti-Cancer Immune Response

Alessandro Sacco et al.

Summary: New insights have been gained into the impact of iron metabolism within the tumor microenvironment on cancer development. Iron promotes the production of reactive oxygen species, which can trigger cell death or malignant transformation, affecting tumor immunosurveillance. The potential and controversies of using iron metabolism as a target for anticancer treatments are discussed, particularly in the context of hot and cold tumors.

Jodie L. Babitt et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is often associated with anemia and disordered iron homeostasis, which have significant adverse consequences. In 2012, KDIGO issued guidelines for managing anemia in chronic kidney disease, and in 2019, they convened conferences to review new evidence and controversies related to iron and anemia treatment. The first conference focused on iron-related issues like diagnostic challenges, treatment options and patient outcomes.
