Alteration of muscle activity during voluntary rehabilitation training with single-joint Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) in patients with shoulder elevation dysfunction from cervical origin

Margaux Noemie Lafitte et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of shoulder HAL rehabilitation on patients with shoulder elevation dysfunction. The results show that participants experienced improvements in muscle strength and range of motion after the training. HAL reduced the activity of the deltoid and trapezius muscles and decreased their coactivation. Additionally, participants showed a reduction in characteristic shrugging compensatory motion, relying more on the deltoid muscle. This study provides insights into the physiological effects of the HAL device and suggests functional recovery in acute and chronic shoulder impairments.

Role of the Window Length for Myoelectric Pattern Recognition in Detecting User Intent of Motion

Andrea Tigrini et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of window length for feature extraction in electromyographic (EMG) based motion intention detection (MID) of the upper limb. Two pattern recognition experiments were conducted, and the results showed that the window length did not significantly affect the feature extraction, and the performances of pattern recognition architectures (PRAs) could be improved through feature fusing schemes.

Shoulder girdle recognition using electrophysiological and low frequency anatomical contraction signals for prosthesis control

Ejay Nsugbe et al.

Summary: By studying shoulder girdle recognition, it was confirmed that combining EMG and accelerometer signals can improve classification accuracy, providing practical evidence for prosthetic control for amputees, and offering a framework for integrating shoulder motion recognition with neuromuscular reprogramming to ease cognitive burden during the process.

Robotic Shoulder Rehabilitation With the Hybrid Assistive Limb in a Patient With Delayed Recovery After Postoperative C5 Palsy: A Case Report

Shigeki Kubota et al.

Summary: Shoulder rehabilitation using the Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) may effectively improve shoulder function in patients with postoperative C5 palsy. HAL training could correct erroneous motion patterns and promote errorless motor learning for recovery in these patients. Our experience suggests that HAL training could be an effective therapeutic tool for patients with postoperative C5 palsy.

Influence of the Passive Stabilization of the Trunk and Upper Limb on Selected Parameters of the Hand Motor Coordination, Grip Strength and Muscle Tension, in Post-Stroke Patients

Anna Olczak et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of stable trunk and affected upper limb on wrist and hand motor coordination, grip strength and muscle tension in post-stroke patients. Results showed passive stabilization of trunk and upper extremity significantly improved motor coordination in fingers and wrist, with increased tone in supraspinatus muscle.

Shoulder Motion Intention Detection Through Myoelectric Pattern Recognition

Andrea Tigrini et al.

Summary: This study addressed the motion intention detection problem from sEMG signals in upper limbs using pattern recognition approaches, achieving high accuracy with LDA and MLR. The integration of TD and FD features was effective in improving classification performance, supporting the use of pattern recognition for solving MID problems.
