American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7: Lifestyle Recommendations, Polygenic Risk, and Lifetime Risk of Coronary Heart Disease

Natalie R. Hasbani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of polygenic risk and lifestyle on the lifetime risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The findings showed that adherence to the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7 (LS7) guidelines was associated with a lower lifetime risk of CHD, especially in individuals with high genetic susceptibility. Adherence to LS7 guidelines contributed more to the lifetime risk of CHD in Black participants. Therefore, improved polygenic risk scores are needed to accurately evaluate genetic susceptibility for CHD in diverse populations.

Association of Apolipoprotein B-Containing Lipoproteins and Risk of Myocardial Infarction in Individuals With and Without Atherosclerosis Distinguishing Between Particle Concentration, Type, and Content

Nicholas A. Marston et al.

Summary: This study found that the number of apoB-containing lipoproteins plays a crucial role in predicting cardiovascular risk independently of cholesterol or TG content. Lowering the concentration of all apoB-containing lipoproteins should be the primary focus of therapeutic strategies.

Optical Coherence Tomography-OCT for Characterization of Non-Atherosclerotic Coronary Lesions in Acute Coronary Syndromes

Mihail Spinu et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases, especially coronary artery disease, are the leading cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerotic plaques are the most common coronary lesions, but there are other non-atherosclerotic lesions such as spontaneous coronary artery dissection and recanalization of coronary thrombus. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution intracoronary imaging technique that can provide histological-like information for better identification and characterization of these lesions.

Summary: Elevated lipoprotein(a) and coronary artery calcium are independently associated with ASCVD risk, and may be concurrently useful in guiding primary prevention therapy decisions, as demonstrated in the MESA and DHS cohorts.

Summary: This guideline provides recommendations and algorithms for clinicians to assess and diagnose chest pain in adult patients, based on contemporary evidence of risk stratification and diagnostic workup. Cost-value considerations in diagnostic testing have been incorporated, and shared decision-making with patients is recommended.

The SGLT-2 inhibitor empagliflozin improves myocardial strain, reduces cardiac fibrosis and pro-inflammatory cytokines in non-diabetic mice treated with doxorubicin

Vincenzo Quagliariello et al.

Summary: EMPA reduces ferroptosis, fibrosis, apoptosis, and inflammation in doxorubicin-treated non-diabetic mice through NLRP3 and MyD88-related pathways, resulting in significant improvements in cardiac functions. These findings provide a basis for translational studies aimed at reducing adverse cardiovascular outcomes in non-diabetic cancer patients treated with doxorubicin.
