The induction of inflammation by the cGAS-STING pathway in human dental pulp cells: A laboratory investigation

Xinxin Tian et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of the cGAS-STING inflammatory pathway in human pulp tissue and dental pulp cells, indicating its potential important role in pulp inflammation and immune defense. Knock-down and inhibition experiments further confirmed the involvement of this signaling axis in the production of IFN-beta, TNF, and IL-6 induced by various stimuli.

Circulating Nucleic Acid-Based Biomarkers of Type 2 Diabetes

Felipe Padilla-Martinez et al.

Summary: This review summarizes recent studies on biomarkers for type 2 diabetes (T2D) based on circulating nucleic acids using genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic technologies. Several candidate biomarkers have been identified for the risk and diagnosis of T2D, the prognosis of T2D complications, and the pharmacodynamics of T2D treatments. Further validation in larger samples and non-invasive samples is needed to support the realization of precision medicine for T2D.

Pyroptosis-Mediated Periodontal Disease

Mariane Beatriz Sordi et al.

Summary: Pyroptosis is a pathological mechanism in the cause of periodontitis, involving caspase activation, cleavage of gasdermin D, and secretion of interleukins to induce tissue destruction. Removing periopathogens' virulence factors that trigger pyroptosis may be a potential strategy to combat periodontal disease.

The prevalence and severity of periodontal disease in Mainland China: Data from the Fourth National Oral Health Survey (2015-2016)

Jian Jiao et al.

Summary: The study revealed a high prevalence of periodontitis among adults in mainland China, with disease severity associated with age and smoking status. Smokers exhibited significantly greater severity of the disease compared to non-smokers, while no significant difference was found between males and females in terms of disease severity.

Fibrin is a critical regulator of neutrophil effector function at the oral mucosal barrier

Lakmali M. Silva et al.

Summary: Tissue-specific cues, particularly fibrin, play a critical role in regulating neutrophil function at mucosal barriers, with commensal microbiota triggering extravascular fibrin deposition. Fibrin engages neutrophils through integrin receptors and activates immune-protective functions, but impaired fibrinolysis can lead to tissue damage. Polymorphisms in plasminogen gene are associated with periodontal disease, suggesting that fibrin-neutrophil engagement may contribute to mucosal diseases.

Systemic circulating inflammatory burden and periodontitis in adolescents

Cecilia C. C. Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between systemic inflammatory burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and periodontitis in adolescents. The results showed that lower socioeconomic status and smoking triggered initial periodontitis, while systemic inflammatory burden of CVD risk played a mediating role. Sensitivity analysis revealed a dose-response relationship between systemic inflammatory burden of CVD risk and moderate periodontitis.

Human Saliva as a Diagnostic Specimen for Early Detection of Inflammatory Biomarkers by Real-Time RT-PCR

Nourin Shakeeb et al.

Summary: Saliva is increasingly studied as a non-invasive and stress-free diagnostic material, with RNA extracted from saliva being used for early disease detection through real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Assessing the host inflammatory response and its resolution at early stages can serve as a prognostic and predictive method for determining therapeutic response or disease progression. The potential of saliva as a specimen for diagnosing early inflammatory biomarkers using RT-PCR is fascinating and useful.

Gingival bleeding on brushing as a sentinel sign of gingival inflammation: A diagnostic accuracy trial for the discrimination of periodontal health and disease

Ke Deng et al.

Summary: Self-reported gingival bleeding on brushing (GBoB) may have low sensitivity for discriminating periodontitis, but it shows promise for monitoring periodontal health and disease, as well as gingival inflammation. A haemoglobin concentration above 90.58 μg/ml or 0.51 μl blood volume enables visual detection of GBoB. Identification of GBoB may lead to earlier detection, prevention, and treatment of periodontal disease.
