Neck pain: global epidemiology, trends and risk factors

Somaye Kazeminasab et al.

Summary: This literature review provides an overview of the global epidemiology and trends of neck pain, as well as the psychological and biological risk factors associated with its initiation and progression. The study reveals that long-term stress, lack of social support, anxiety, and depression are important psychological risk factors for neck pain, while certain diseases and demographic characteristics such as age and sex can also influence its occurrence and development.

Global, regional, and national burden of migraine in 204 countries and territories, 1990 to 2019

Saeid Safiri et al.

Summary: The Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 revealed an increase in the burden of migraine from 1990 to 2019, with significant intercountry differences. Migraine prevalence was higher in females and decreased with age after the 40 to 44 age group. Enhanced migraine care is necessary to increase awareness of risk factors and treatment strategies, particularly among young adults and middle-aged women, as well as to gather more data on migraines.

Epidemiological trends of low back pain at the global, regional, and national levels

Linfeng Wang et al.

Summary: Based on the Global Burden of Disease study, the incidence and DALY rate of low back pain (LBP) globally showed a downward trend from 1990 to 2019, especially in East and South Asia. Older and female populations bear a heavier burden of LBP.

Saeid Safiri et al.

Summary: This study reported the prevalence, deaths, and DALYs of type 2 diabetes and its risk factors in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. The findings showed an increase in the global prevalence and death rates of type 2 diabetes since 1990, with low and middle-income countries carrying the highest burden.

Diabetes Mellitus and the Development of Lumbar Canal Stenosis: Is There Any Relevance?

Ghanshyam Kakadiya et al.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to assess the relationship between the severity of lumbar canal stenosis (LCS) and type-II diabetes mellitus (DM). The study found that longer duration and uncontrolled diabetes were risk factors for LCS and directly correlated with the severity of LCS. Results showed that uncontrolled and longer duration of DM had significant elastin fibers loss and higher rates of disk apoptosis, matrix aggrecan fragmentation, and disk glycosaminoglycan content.

Global, regional, and national neck pain burden in the general population, 1990-2019: An analysis of the global burden of disease study 2019

Dong Woo Shin et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of the global epidemiology and trends associated with neck pain based on Global Burden of Disease data collected between 1990 and 2019. Despite variations across regions, there was no significant change in the prevalence, incidence, and years lived with a disability (YLD) of neck pain between 1990 and 2019.

The prevalence and impact of migraine and severe headache in the United States: Updated age, sex, and socioeconomic-specific estimates from government health surveys

Rebecca Burch et al.

Summary: Accurate estimates of the burden of migraine and severe headache are crucial for evidence-based decision-making about workforce needs and health resource distribution. The prevalence of migraine in the US has remained stable, with a higher impact in women of childbearing age and those of lower socioeconomic status. Many adults with migraine or severe headaches are disadvantaged, highlighting the need for improved funding for treatment provision and research to reduce the future burden of disease.

Metabolic Aspects of Migraine: Association With Obesity and Diabetes Mellitus

Eduardo Rivera-Mancilla et al.

Summary: Migraine is a disabling neurovascular disorder that can drastically affect patients' quality of life, with a higher prevalence in women. Metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes mellitus may be related to migraine, but the mechanisms involved are not yet well established. Further research is needed to understand the possible connections between migraine and metabolic disorders.

Association between type 2 diabetes and chronic low back pain in general practices in Germany

Louis Jacob et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and chronic low back pain. Women with type 2 diabetes had a higher risk of CLBP, while men had a lower risk compared to their counterparts without type 2 diabetes. Further research is needed to explore the underlying factors explaining these differences in the relationship between type 2 diabetes and CLBP.

Summary: This study is the first to examine the association between diabetes and migraine, finding a higher prevalence of diabetes in female migraine patients. However, due to high heterogeneity among studies, meta-analysis was not possible. Further longitudinal studies are needed to clarify the association between migraine and diabetes.

Differences between self-reported and laboratory measures of diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and hypercholesterolemia

Pedro Cisalpino Pinheiro et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the self-reported prevalence measured by lab tests and the false positive and negative values for diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and hypercholesterolemia. Sensitivity was higher for diabetes and among older adults, while specificity was high for all diseases and decreased with schooling. Low sensitivity suggests that prevalence might be higher than indicated by self-reported measures.

Female Gender Is Associated with a Higher Prevalence of Chronic Neck Pain, Chronic Low Back Pain, and Migraine: Results of the Spanish National Health Survey, 2017

Domingo Palacios-Cena et al.

Summary: The study found that in Spain, females have a higher prevalence of chronic neck pain, chronic low back pain, and migraine headache compared to males. Anxiety, depression, and poor self-rated health are significantly associated with an increased prevalence of these diseases. Older age, limitations to usual activity, and comorbid respiratory disease are common factors associated with these conditions.
