However, most studies had substantial methodological limitations. Schema therapy is a promising treatment for anxiety, OCD, and PTSD, but there is a systematic problem in the quality of research.

Adolescent maladaptive schemas and childhood abuse and neglect: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This study reviewed the associations between childhood emotional, physical and sexual abuse, neglect and bullying and early maladaptive schemas. The meta-analyses showed small to medium associations between these experiences and schemas. The findings suggest that childhood abuse and neglect experiences are related to maladaptive schemas before adolescence.

Adverse childhood experiences and adolescent mental health: Understanding the roles of gender and teenage risk and protective factors

Summary: Research findings indicate gender differences in the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on boys' and girls' mental health symptoms. Initially, ACEs were associated with increased risk of depressive and anxious tendencies in boys, but with only depressive symptoms in girls. After accounting for teenage protective factors, ACEs were related to decreased risk of depressive and anxious symptoms among girls.

Significant associations were found between certain EMS domains of parents and their adult children, mediated by immature defence styles in a serial mediation model. These findings contribute to understanding the relationships between EMS domains of parents and their adult children through immature defence styles, highlighting the importance of integrating different theories for a comprehensive understanding of family dynamics.

Adverse childhood experiences and early maladaptive schemas in adulthood: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: Background Schema Therapy is based on the theory that trauma and neglect in childhood lead to early maladaptive schemas and psychopathology in adulthood. The aim of this review was to evaluate support for this theory by synthesizing the literature on childhood adversity and schemas. The results suggest that childhood experiences such as emotional neglect and abuse are related to early maladaptive schemas in adulthood.
