The effectiveness of schema therapy for patients with anxiety disorders, OCD, or PTSD: A systematic review and research agenda

Nancy Peeters et al.

Summary: The review found that schema therapy can have beneficial effects on disorder-specific symptoms and early maladaptive schemas in anxiety disorders, OCD, and PTSD patients. However, most studies had substantial methodological limitations. Schema therapy is a promising treatment for anxiety, OCD, and PTSD, but there is a systematic problem in the quality of research.

Adolescent maladaptive schemas and childhood abuse and neglect: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Tamara May et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the associations between childhood emotional, physical and sexual abuse, neglect and bullying and early maladaptive schemas. The meta-analyses showed small to medium associations between these experiences and schemas. The findings suggest that childhood abuse and neglect experiences are related to maladaptive schemas before adolescence.

Early maladaptive schemas in eating disorders: A systematic review

Anthea Maher et al.

Summary: Research suggests a significant association between early maladaptive schemas (EMS) and eating disorders (EDs), contributing to our understanding of ED etiology including different diagnostic categories. More diverse studies with gender and age diversity samples are needed, and this review highlights important implications for practitioners.

Understanding intergenerational transmission of early maladaptive schemas from a memory perspective: Moderating role of overgeneral memory on adverse experiences

Idil Alaftar et al.

Summary: This study examines whether overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM) facilitates the transmission of early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) by strengthening maladaptive thinking patterns after traumatic experiences. The results confirm that adverse childhood experiences mediate the relationship between mothers' and children's EMSs.

Adverse childhood experiences and adolescent mental health: Understanding the roles of gender and teenage risk and protective factors

Jamie M. Gajos et al.

Summary: Research findings indicate gender differences in the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on boys' and girls' mental health symptoms. Initially, ACEs were associated with increased risk of depressive and anxious tendencies in boys, but with only depressive symptoms in girls. After accounting for teenage protective factors, ACEs were related to decreased risk of depressive and anxious symptoms among girls.

A meta-analysis of the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and depression in adolescence and young adulthood

Asnea Tariq et al.

Summary: Early maladaptive schemas are significantly associated with depression, especially schemas related to disconnection/rejection, impaired autonomy/performance, and other-directedness. Age and gender do not moderate this association, highlighting the importance for clinicians to focus on specific maladaptive schemas to promote psychological health in adolescents and young adults.

Associations Between Trauma, Early Maladaptive Schemas, Personality Traits, and Clinical Severity in Eating Disorder Patients: A Clinical Presentation and Mediation Analysis

Paolo Meneguzzo et al.

Summary: Trauma experiences are significantly associated with more severe clinical symptomatology in Eating Disorders (EDs). Patients with trauma exposure during both childhood and adulthood have a more impaired clinical profile. The disconnection and rejection (DR) early maladaptive schema plays a specific mediator role in the relationship between childhood trauma and eating psychopathology.

Associations between early maladaptive schema domains of parents and their adult children: The role of defence styles

Cemre Karaarslan et al.

Summary: The study explored the role of defence styles on the associations between early maladaptive schemas of parents and their adult children. Significant associations were found between certain EMS domains of parents and their adult children, mediated by immature defence styles in a serial mediation model. These findings contribute to understanding the relationships between EMS domains of parents and their adult children through immature defence styles, highlighting the importance of integrating different theories for a comprehensive understanding of family dynamics.

Adverse childhood experiences and early maladaptive schemas in adulthood: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Pamela D. Pilkington et al.

Summary: Background Schema Therapy is based on the theory that trauma and neglect in childhood lead to early maladaptive schemas and psychopathology in adulthood. The aim of this review was to evaluate support for this theory by synthesizing the literature on childhood adversity and schemas. The results suggest that childhood experiences such as emotional neglect and abuse are related to early maladaptive schemas in adulthood.
