Clinically significant changes in health-related quality of life in head and neck cancer patients following intensive nutritional care during radiotherapy

Sheilla de Oliveira Faria et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore whether adherence to intensive nutritional care during radiotherapy would avoid a meaningful worsening in quality of life in head and neck cancer patients, and whether adherence was associated with better nutritional outcomes. The results showed that adherent patients had nonsignificant clinical change in function scales, while non-adherent patients had a clinically significant worsening in physical, cognitive, and social function, and the prevalence of malnutrition increased significantly only in non-adherent patients.

Awareness of Head and Neck Cancers: A 2021 Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey in Poland

Wojciech Pinkas et al.

Summary: Public awareness of head and neck cancers among adults in Poland is low. Most respondents have little or no knowledge about this disease. The most commonly identified symptoms of HNC are a lump in the neck and swelling or a lump in the throat; while smoking cigarettes/tobacco is correctly identified as a risk factor by the majority of respondents.

A 2020 Update on Public Awareness of Head and Neck Cancers

Sina J. Torabi et al.

Summary: The survey revealed a need for improved knowledge regarding head and neck cancers and the role of HPV in them, with exposure to Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week potentially aiding in increasing awareness. Currently, women and elderly individuals have lower exposure rates, while individuals with higher education, heavy alcohol consumption, and current smoking habits are more likely to be exposed to relevant information.

European white paper: oropharyngeal dysphagia in head and neck cancer

Laura W. J. Baijens et al.

Summary: The European White Paper document provides best practices for managing oropharyngeal dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients, emphasizing the need for robust scientific research. Despite inadequate evidence on diagnostics and treatment for OD, there is expected increase in prevalence due to factors like aging populations and HPV-related cancers. Recommendations include timely implementation of OD screening and continued research efforts to improve management strategies for OD in HNC.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Prolongation of definitive head and neck cancer radiotherapy: Survival impact and predisposing factors

Michael Xiang et al.

Summary: The study suggests that prolongation of definitive radiotherapy for head and neck cancer can significantly impact patient survival, especially when exceeding 8 days. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified predictors of prolongation, including receipt of systemic therapy, presence of baseline comorbidities, lack of private insurance, and tumor/nodal staging.

Understanding Cachexia in Head and Neck Cancer

Sivaramakrishnan Muthanandam et al.

Summary: Cancer cachexia, a major comorbidity of cancer and cancer therapy, is now considered a multifactorial syndrome characterized by drastic weight loss, anorexia, asthenia, and anemia. Head and neck cancer patients are at greater risk for developing and experiencing severe cachexia syndrome, but the scientific evidence, approach, and management in this population have not been thoroughly explored.
