Shigella sonnei: virulence and antibiotic resistance

Ahtesham Ahmad Shad et al.

Summary: S. sonnei is an emerging pathogen globally, with increasing prevalence and significant role in occupying ecological niches of other gut pathogens. Recent studies suggest that improved sanitation has reduced cross-immunization with other strains, while enhancing its competitive advantage through specific secretion systems.

Emergence of fatal Mannheimia haemolytica infections in cattle in the Netherlands

M. M. Biesheuvel et al.

Summary: The Dutch national surveillance system has observed outbreaks of fatal infections by M. haemolytica in dairy cows and veal calves, prompting an in-depth analysis of pathology data from 2004-2018. Multilevel logistic regression models revealed an increase in deaths associated with M. haemolytica infection over time, with an increase in both acute pleuropneumonia in dairy cows and polyserositis in veal calves. Infections with M. haemolytica were found to be the most likely cause of death and were more common in certain regions and seasons.

Metagenomic Analysis Reveals New Microbiota Related to Fiber Digestion in Pigs

Gensheng Liu et al.

Summary: Utilizing high fiber and low-cost crop coproducts can help alleviate competition between people and livestock for crops. Microbial fermentation in the large intestine plays a significant role in the digestion of dietary fibers in pigs. Research on the gut microbiota of pigs with high fiber digestibility revealed potential new types of microorganisms associated with fiber digestion and highlighted specific gene families contributing to cellulose and hemicellulose degradation. Lignin degradation genes were found to be more abundant in pigs with high fiber digestibility, indicating a stronger fiber digestion potential.
