Distinct roles of astroglia and neurons in synaptic plasticity and memory

Ji-Hong Liu et al.

Summary: Through integrating synaptic inputs, astrocytic IP3 receptor type 2 (IP(3)R2)-dependent Ca2+ signaling is crucial for late-phase LTP, while neuron-derived BDNF is essential for both early and late-phase LTP. Dynamic differences in BDNF secretion play a role in modulating distinct forms of LTP, with astrocyte- and neuron-derived BDNF exhibiting different roles in memory. These findings enrich our understanding of LTP and memory at the cellular level, suggesting distinct roles of astrocytes and neurons in information integration.

Medial prefrontal cortex and anteromedial thalamus interaction regulates goal-directed behavior and dopaminergic neuron activity

Chen Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between prefrontal cortex (PFC) and motivation, reinforcement, and dopamine neuron activity. The authors found that stimulation of medial PFC neurons can activate downstream regions and reinforce behavior and dopamine neuron activity. They also discovered reciprocal excitatory functional connectivity and co-activation between PFC and anteromedial thalamus (AM) during the viewing of reinforcing video clips. These findings highlight the importance of the cortico-thalamic loop in regulating motivation, reinforcement, and dopaminergic neuron activity.

Astrocyte-neuron metabolic cooperation shapes brain activity

Gilles Bonvento et al.

Summary: The brain has minimal energy reserves and relies on precise coordination between neurotransmission and energy metabolism. Different types of neural cells display unique metabolic signatures, necessitating intercellular exchange of metabolites to sustain brain function. Disruption of this metabolic cooperation may lead to neurological diseases, highlighting the importance of innovative therapies to preserve brain energetics.

Impaired calcium signaling in astrocytes modulates autism spectrum disorder-like behaviors in mice

Summary: Astrocytes play a role in the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study demonstrates that IP3R2 conditional KO mice exhibit ASD-like behaviors, and identifies astrocyte-derived ATP as a modulator of these behaviors in mice.
