Efficient transport of active species in triple-phase boundary through Paddle-Effect of ionomer for alkaline fuel cells

Junliang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transport mechanism of active species in the catalyst layer of alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) by synthesizing and characterizing ionomers. The results indicate that the free flow of water and the paddle effect of the ionomer substituent play a crucial role in enhancing active species transport in the catalyst layer.

Tailoring catalyst layer structures for anion exchange membrane fuel cells by controlling the size of ionomer aggreates in dispersion

Jonghyun Hyun et al.

Summary: The rational design guide for cathode and anode catalyst layers using m-TPN1 ionomer can lead to a more uniform ionomer distribution and larger triple-phase-boundary. Enhanced power density of membrane-electrode-assembly is achieved as the ionomer distribution of the cathode catalyst layer becomes more uniform. The power density at fully humidified condition is strongly correlated with the porosity of anode catalyst layer due to the limitation of hydrogen transport at anode by water flooding.

Analysis of gas transport phenomena in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell by electrochemical pressure impedance spectroscopy

Anantrao Vijay Shirsath et al.

Summary: Electrochemical pressure impedance spectroscopy (EPIS) is used to differentiate gas and liquid transport/transfer phenomena in electrochemical cells. This study investigates EPIS impedance in a membrane fuel cell under predominant gas transport control, with little presence of liquid water. Results show that operating the fuel cell with pure oxygen allows observation of gas convection, while oxygen dilution leads to diffusion phenomena. The presence of liquid water and poor management of it worsen gas transport situation in the porous layers.

Summary: Water transport through porous carbon felt gas diffusion layers (GDLs) was simulated using a 3D Color-Gradient Lattice Boltzmann model. The GDL microstructures were reconstructed from high-resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) and a in-house algorithm was developed to distinguish carbon fibers and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Capillary hysteresis was investigated by simulating intrusion and drainage curves and comparing them to testbench data.

3D-Zipped Interface: In Situ Covalent-Locking for High Performance of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Xian Liang et al.

Summary: By introducing a 3D-interfacial zipping concept, the challenges of mass transport resistances in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are addressed, leading to enhanced power densities and long-term stabilities. The use of a bi-cationic quaternary-ammonium-based polyelectrolyte creates a covalently locked interface that prevents delamination without sacrificing fuel cell performance, as demonstrated in ex situ and in situ tests. A high power density of 1.5 W cm(-2) was achieved in a H-2/O-2 AEMFC test, with performance retention for at least 120 hours at a high current density of 0.6 A cm(-2).

How to appropriately assess the oxygen reduction reaction activity of platinum group metal catalysts with rotating disk electrode

Yun-Fei Xia et al.

Summary: The slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has become a bottleneck for the large-scale implementation of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. There is confusion in the assessment of platinum group metals (PGMs) ORR activities, including potential conversion, test protocols, and activity calculation processes. This study demonstrates two standard calculation processes for PGM ORR activities and emphasizes the importance of using reference electrodes for accurate assessment. Additionally, the study highlights the discrepancy in ORR activities obtained via different test protocols and proposes an average adsorption model and coverage effects to explain the behavior of ORR polarization plots.
