Does the vertical vs horizontal positioning of surfaces affect either biofilm formation on different materials or their resistance to detachment?

Piyush Kumar Jha et al.

Summary: The study found that different bacterial strains have varying abilities to form biofilms, and the vertical or horizontal position of surfaces may also affect biofilm formation. Biofilms formed horizontally are fragile and can be partially removed by rinsing, while Bacillus cereus 98/4 biofilms formed horizontally exhibit extreme resistance to shear forces.

Novel antibody assessment method for microbial compositional alteration in the oral cavity

Sumire Hoashi-Takiguchi et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that dysbiosis, a change in the composition of commensal microflora, is closely related to the onset of various diseases. The composition of microflora in the oral cavity is closely connected to oral diseases and systemic diseases. Next-generation sequencing techniques are used to examine changes in bacterial flora, but more analytical methods are needed to understand bacterial activity in detail. Additionally, the oral environment is unique due to the role of secretory antibodies in saliva in bacterial flora formation. This study aimed to develop a new method for evaluating the compositional change of microbiota using flow cytometry and specific antibodies.

Heparin stimulates biofilm formation ofEscherichia colistrain Nissle 1917

Dandan Wu et al.

Summary: The study showed that heparin stimulated the biofilm formation of EcN. Both the sulfation and chain length of heparin contributed to enhancing the biofilm formation of EcN, which could potentially promote the intestinal colonization of probiotics to combat pathogen infections.

Propolis ethanolic extract has double-face in vitro effect on the planktonic growth and biofilm formation of some commercial probiotics

Ibrahim Alfarrayeh et al.

Summary: This study found that the effect of propolis ethanolic extract on five commercial probiotics is strain-dependent, with high concentrations having inhibitory effects on all probiotics, while low concentrations may have strain-dependent prebiotic effects. The biofilms of Normaflore and Linex were enhanced at low concentrations of PEE and inhibited at higher concentrations.

High-specificity local and global c-di-GMP signaling

Regine Hengge

Summary: Bacteria use a combination of local and global c-di-GMP signaling to create a complex signaling network, allowing for specific parallel pathways. Local c-di-GMP signaling is defined by specific knockout phenotypes, direct protein interactions, and cellular c-di-GMP levels remaining below a certain threshold. Adaptive changes in signaling network architecture can further enhance signaling flexibility.
