Towards Multi-Scale Space-Time Characteristics of Air Quality and Population Exposure Risk

Xiao Xiao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatiotemporal characteristics of air quality in the traditional industrial areas of Northeast China in 2015, including seasonal variations, variations before and during heating periods, and the occurrence frequency of priority pollutants. The results suggest that GIS methods and air monitoring data help to establish a comprehensive air quality analysis framework and reveal the trends of air quality with latitude.

A 24-hour population distribution dataset based on mobile phone data from Helsinki Metropolitan Area, Finland

Claudia Bergroth et al.

Summary: This article presents temporally dynamic population distribution data for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, Finland, at the level of 250 m by 250 m statistical grid cells. The dataset, based on aggregated mobile phone data, allows for the analysis of temporal dynamics of the city and its implications for spatial accessibility analyses, crisis management, and planning.

Assessing individual activity-related exposures to traffic congestion using GPS trajectory data

Zihan Kan et al.

Summary: This study examines individual exposures to traffic congestion during various types of trips using taxi GPS trajectory and POI datasets in Wuhan, China. The findings indicate that individual exposures to traffic congestion are more related to the space-time rhythm of traffic flows rather than the types of trips or activities conducted.

A new mobile monitoring approach to characterize community-scale air pollution patterns and identify local high pollution zones

Yanju Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents an integrated mobile measurement and data analysis approach to study community-level air pollution patterns. The study found that traffic was the dominant primary source of air pollution in both urban and suburban settings. It also identified the contribution of regional and local sources to air pollution and suggested the use of repeated measurements for mapping air pollution patterns within the community.

Daily space-time activities, multiple environmental exposures, and anxiety symptoms: A cross-sectional mobile phone-based sensing study

Yuliang Lan et al.

Summary: This study found possible nonlinear associations between mobility-based environmental exposures and anxiety symptoms. Green space was negatively associated with anxiety symptoms for participants with moderate exposure. Noise levels above 60 dB and air pollution concentrations above 17.2 µg/m³ were positively associated with anxiety symptoms. Crowdedness was positively associated with anxiety symptoms, but the effect diminished with higher levels of crowdedness. Blue space tended to be positively associated with anxiety symptoms.

Quantifying the influence of 2D and 3D urban morphology on the thermal environment across climatic zones

Wan-Ben Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between 2D/3D urban morphology and the urban thermal environment in 62 representative cities across four major climate zones in China. The results show significant differences in surface regional heat island intensity between different climate zones. 3D urban features can effectively improve the interpretation of urban features for heat island intensity, with urban trees and tall buildings playing a positive role in cooling effects.

Natural and human factors influencing urban particulate matter concentrations in central heating areas with long-term wearable monitoring devices

Chuyi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study used wearable devices to monitor the concentrations of urban particulate matter (UPM) in northern China during the heating and non-heating seasons. By analyzing multiple factors, including temperature, humidity, land use, and point-of-interest data, the study revealed the spatial-temporal distribution and influencing factors of UPM. The results provide valuable insights for urban planning and health risk reduction.

Impact of clean air action on the PM2.5 pollution in Beijing, China: Insights gained from two heating seasons measurements

Nini Pang et al.

Summary: Comprehensive observations in Beijing showed that the Clean Air Action resulted in significant reductions in PM2.5 and other pollutants during heating seasons from 2016 to 2018. The shift from sulfate-driven to nitrate-driven PM2.5 pollution and the influence of photochemical reactions on nitrate formation were highlighted in the study.

Identifying the spatiotemporal dynamic of PM2.5 concentrations at multiple scales using geographically and temporally weighted regression model across China during 2015-2018

Bin Guo et al.

Summary: This study calibrates PM2.5 concentrations across China during 2015-2018 at a 1 km resolution scale using a novel geographically and temporally weighted regression model (GTWR). Results show that the GTWR model performs well in simulating PM2.5 concentrations at a higher spatial resolution and accuracy, providing valuable insights into the spatial dynamics of PM2.5 concentrations.

Summary: This study proposes a new method for spatial prediction of PM2.5 pollution based on the pollution scene assumption, and validates the potential effectiveness of this assumption through geographically weighted regression kriging. The research finds that PM2.5 concentration varies between urban microenvironments, and pollution scene-based GWRK is effective for high-resolution mapping.

Air pollution, physical activity and health: A mapping review of the evidence

Marko Tainio et al.

Summary: The study reviewed the empirical evidence on the links between air pollution and physical activity, finding that air pollution may decrease physical activity levels during high pollution episodes. Long-term exposure to air pollution might also diminish the health gains from physical activity. Public health modelling studies suggest that in most situations, the benefits of physical activity outweigh the risks of air pollution. However, evidence for low- and middle-income countries, sensitive subpopulations, and indoor air pollution is weak.
