Combined experimental-numerical analysis of hydrogen as a combustion enhancer applied to wankel engine

Cheng Shi et al.

Summary: Hydrogen fractions and equivalence ratios have been found to have significant effects on the combustion characteristics and operational stability of Wankel engines. Increasing hydrogen fraction leads to increased chamber pressure, shortened flame development and propagation periods, and reduced wall heat loss. Additionally, higher hydrogen content improves the stability of engine operations.

Understanding the role of turbulence-induced blade configuration in improving combustion process for hydrogen-enriched rotary engine

Cheng Shi et al.

Summary: The effects of turbulence-induced blade (TIB) configuration on ignition, combustion process, and emission performance in rotary engines were investigated using numerical simulations. The results show that introducing TIB improves turbulent flow, with the leading-blade rotor chamber exhibiting better combustion and emission characteristics. The TIB configuration has a greater impact on combustion improvement in pure gasoline engines.

Development and verification of a reduced dimethoxymethane/n-heptane/toluene kinetic mechanism and modelling for CI engines

Xiuyong Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, a reduced kinetic mechanism of dimethoxymethane (DMM)/n-heptane/toluene is developed and validated. The results show that the new mechanism can accurately predict the combustion characteristics of DMM, n-heptane, and toluene. It is also found that DMM has slightly higher maximum flame speeds compared to n-heptane.

Implementation of various bowl designs in an HPDI natural gas engine focused on performance and pollutant emissions

Jianhui Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different piston bowl designs on the performance and pollutant emissions of pilot spray-ignited natural gas engines. The results show that different chamber shapes slightly affect the combustion initiation and in-cylinder pressure. Increasing the recess depth of combustion chambers reduces NOx formations but sacrifices fuel economy.

Feasibility study of novel DME fuel injection Equipment: Part 1-fuel injection strategies and spray characteristics

Nalini Kanta Mukherjee et al.

Summary: This study assesses the technical feasibility of using DME as an alternative to diesel fuel and simulates the combustion process of a DME-fueled engine using computational fluid dynamics. The results suggest that DME exhibits faster evaporation and lower turbulence kinetic energy, leading to more efficient combustion and reduced heat transfer to the cylinder walls.

Turning biodiesel glycerol into oxygenated fuel additives and their effects on the behavior of internal combustion engines: A comprehensive systematic review

Reza Sedghi et al.

Summary: The boom of the biodiesel industry has led to increased global glycerol production, but a large portion of glycerol is recklessly discharged into the environment, overshadowing the environmental benefits of biodiesel fuel. By converting glycerol into fuels or additives, the energy content of glycerol can be effectively recovered while reducing harmful exhaust emissions from combustion engines. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the latest advances in using glycerol and its derivatives to improve the operation of internal combustion engines. Different pathways for converting glycerol into oxygenated fuel additives are introduced, and the effects of glycerol and its derivatives on engine behavior are comprehensively summarized and mechanistically discussed. The pros and cons of using glycerol and its derivatives in diesel/gasoline fuel formulations are examined to highlight important future research directions in this field.

Experimental study on spray characteristics of octanol biodiesel and modification of spray tip penetration model

Junjian Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of octanol on the spray characteristics of biodiesel through experiments and model verification. Results show that increasing octanol content leads to changes in spray penetration, cone angle, velocity, and area. The modified model, which introduces density, viscosity, and correction factors, is more suitable for predicting the spray characteristics of blended fuel under high injection pressure.
