Thickness effects on the delamination energy release rate of thermal barrier coating subjected to thermo-mechanical loads

Summary: This study theoretically investigates the delamination energy release rate of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) under steady thermal gradient and mechanical loads. Integral equations are derived to calculate the energy release rate and mode mixity phase angle. A closed form energy release rate solution is obtained for the thermal gradient case, which agrees with numerical results. It is found that the energy release rate increases with increasing coat/substrate thickness ratio, and the mechanical loads reduce the energy release rate. The obtained results provide important insights for the assessment and design of TBCs and other layered structures subjected to thermo-mechanical loads.

Model on thermal conductivity prediction of quasi-columnar structured coating by plasma spray physical vapor deposition

Summary: A novel three-dimensional geometrical model was established to reflect the quasi-columnar structural characteristics of YSZ and GZO coatings. The spatial distribution of pores and porosity, thermal resistance behaviors, and thermal conductivity of the coatings were analyzed based on this model. Additionally, a thermodynamic model was used to estimate the thermal conductivity of the quasi-columnar structured coatings at different temperatures, and a validated model for predicting the effective thermal conductivity of the GZO/YSZ double-layer coating was developed.

Effect of spraying power on the morphology of YSZ splat and micro-structure of thermal barrier coating

Summary: Yttria partially stabilized zirconia splats and their macroscopic thermal barrier coatings were prepared using atmospheric plasma spraying. Through image analysis and scanning electron microscopy, it was found that different pores and cracks were formed during the spraying process. The study revealed that the spraying power played a significant role in altering the morphology of the splats, leading to the formation of horizontal cracks and pores at low power and vertical cracks at high power.

The functionally graded TTBC showed higher durability than conventional TTBC due to improved bonding strength, thermal shock resistance, and lack of a TGO layer at the bond/top coat interface. Additionally, the thermal insulation capacity of the functionally graded TTBC was better than traditional TTBC.

Columnar Thermal Barrier Coatings Produced by Different Thermal Spray Processes

Summary: Suspension plasma spraying and plasma spray-physical vapor deposition are thermal spray technologies capable of producing TBCs with columnar microstructures similar to EB-PVD, but at higher deposition rates and relatively lower costs. Results show that dense PS-PVD-processed TBCs have the highest lifetime, at the expense of the highest thermal conductivity.
