Corrosion behavior of single- and poly-crystalline dual-phase TiAl-Ti3Al alloy in NaCl solution

Dongpeng Wang et al.

Summary: To investigate the correlation between single-crystalline structure and corrosion performance in high-strength TiAl alloys, the electrochemical and surface characterization of Ti-45Al-8Nb dual-phase single crystals and polycrystalline counterparts were compared in NaCl solution. The results showed that the dual-phase single crystals exhibited a lower corrosion rate, higher pitting potential, and a more compact passive film with a higher impedance of charge transfer compared to the polycrystals. This enhanced corrosion resistance can be attributed to the more homogeneous microstructure and composition distribution in the dual-phase single crystals.

Corrosion and impact-abrasion-corrosion behaviors of quenching-tempering martensitic Fe-Cr alloy steels

Zhi-bin Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the corrosion and impact-abrasion-corrosion behaviors of quenching-tempering Fe-Cr martensitic steels for ball mill liner compared with high manganese steel in a corrosive slurry from a copper mine. The results show that the corrosion resistance and protectiveness of the passive film of Fe-Cr martensitic steels decrease with increasing carbon content. The quenching-tempering Fe-Cr martensitic steel exhibits better impact-abrasion-corrosion resistance in the corrosive slurry, especially the alloy steel with a carbon content of 0.3 wt.%. Mechanical damage plays the most significant role in the impact-abrasion-corrosion behaviors of the steels.

Precipitation behavior of P550 steel for non-magnetic drill collars during isothermal aging at 650-900 °C

Li-wei Xu et al.

Summary: The precipitation behavior of P550 steel for non-magnetic drill collars was investigated, with cellular Cr2N being the main precipitate formed at 650-900 degrees C. The precipitation of cellular Cr2N at 750 degrees C was found to be the most sensitive, with short-range intergranular diffusion of Cr controlling initial precipitation and long-range bulk diffusion of Cr controlling growth during long-term aging. Additionally, increasing nitrogen content promoted the nucleation and driving force for cellular Cr2N precipitation.

Synergistic effects of deposits and sulfate reducing bacteria on the corrosion of carbon steel

J. Yang et al.

Summary: The synergistic effects of deposits and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) on the corrosion of carbon steel were investigated through experiments. The results showed that deposits and SRB contributed synergistically to both uniform and localized corrosion. The uneven distribution of iron sulfides produced by SRB promoted under-deposit corrosion (UDC), while deposits accelerated SRB corrosion due to UDC-induced accumulation of SRB.

Effect of aging treatment on microstructure and corrosion behavior of a Fe-18Cr-15Mn-0.66N stainless steel

Yanxin Qiao et al.

Summary: The effect of aging treatment on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of a high-nitrogen stainless steel (HNSS) was investigated. The aging treatment led to the precipitation of Cr2N particles along the grain boundaries, and the morphology changed from dispersive particles to a continuous network. Aging time had minor effects on corrosion potential and corrosion current density, but resulted in a sharp decrease in the pitting corrosion potential. The passive film behaved as a n-type semiconductor, and the donor density of the passive film increased with aging time. However, the fraction of stable oxide (Cr2O3) in the passive film decreased with aging time. The aging treatment weakened the corrosion resistance of HNSS by deteriorating the protectiveness of the passive film.

Erosion-corrosion resistance of Mo-Ti- and Ni-Cr-Mo-alloyed medium-carbon martensitic steels: a critical analysis of synergistic effect of erosion and corrosion

De-fa Li et al.

Summary: This study compares the erosion-corrosion resistance of Mo-Ti-alloyed medium-carbon martensitic steel with Ni-Cr-Mo-alloyed medium-carbon martensitic steel under impingement by NaCl solution with gravels. It is found that the erosion-corrosion rate of Mo-Ti-alloyed steel is relatively lower, which is due to the reduction of synergistic effect caused by surface plastic deformation and work hardening.

Metastable pitting corrosion behavior of laser powder bed fusion produced Ti-6Al-4V in Hank's solution

Yu-Wei Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metastable pitting corrosion behavior of LPBF-produced Ti-6Al-4V in Hank's solution using electrochemical methods. The LPBF-produced sample showed a higher frequency of pit nucleation compared to the annealed counterpart, mainly due to the passive films formed on the LPBF-produced sample having a higher flux of oxygen vacancies, absorbing more aggressive ions and producing more cation vacancies.

Electrochemical Behavior and Passive Film Composition of a High-Nitrogen Nickel-Free Austenitic Stainless Steel

Yanxin Qiao et al.

Summary: The electrochemical corrosion behavior of an aged Fe-18Cr-15Mn-0.66 N high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steel in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was studied, showing that the passive films formed were mainly composed of Cr oxide/hydroxide and iron oxides. XPS depth profile analysis indicated an increase in Cr and Fe contents near the passive film/HNSS interface, while the contents of Cr and Fe oxide/hydroxide decreased.

Corrosion Behavior of a Nickel-Free High-Nitrogen Stainless Steel with Hydrogen Charging

Yanxin Qiao et al.

Summary: The research found that hydrogen charging not only increased the passive current density of high-nitrogen stainless steel, but also increased its resistance to pitting. This was attributed to the increase in carrier density, decrease in chromium content, and decrease in the ratio of oxygen ions to hydroxide ions in the passive film.

Additive manufacturing of steel-copper functionally graded material with ultrahigh bonding strength

Chaolin Tan et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing technology is used to process functionally graded materials with high bonding strength, as demonstrated by the successful development of a steel-copper FGM using laser powder bed fusion. X-ray tomography was used to evaluate the low porosity level and the fine dendritic grains in the interface, which contribute to the high interfacial strength. Mechanical and fatigue tests confirmed the ultrahigh bonding strength in FGMs, surpassing that of traditional manufacturing methods, with discussion on the mechanisms involved.
